Well, the truth is, no one in America did more for oil shale development and other alternative fuels development than Jimmy Carter and his Synfuels initiatives. If you want some of the history, and why Carter's investment and tax incentive strategy failed, read here. Basically, Reagan gutted energy research Carter started, including into how to economically convert shale into oil. When the Iranian crisis ended and Saudis flooded the market with cheap oil, Exxon shut down its $5 billion Colony Oil Shale project in western Colorado, and the industry lost interest in oil shale.

Reagan stopped it
Now we want to start it again
Dems don't want it started

What point were you trying to make with your post?  Dems are justified in doing so since Reagan gutted Carter's plans?

well..  to be fair..  I believe the democrats are thinking that any oil that we find and refine here will just slow down their march toward alternative fuels.. to them.. the end justifies the means.   

The other thing is that they are really in the pockets of the whacked out environmentalists.    And.. let's face it.. to admit that the world has changed and that they are now wrong is simply abhorent to them.

Mccain voted against offshore drilling and such decades ago.. the situation changed radically and he changed his position to reflect the new situation.   

That is leadership.. it will be a real shame if that empty suit osamabinbiden gets in.
