Reid to Renew Oil Shale Ban
« on: September 25, 2008, 08:53:30 PM »
The democrats have relented to let the moritorium on drilling laps in sept or oct. But while we are worried about the economy Harry Reid is still trying to deny access to oil reserves under the table.

Reid to Renew Oil Shale Ban, Deny Americans Vast Energy Resources During Economic Crisis

 09/25/2008 - 12:46:53 PM

We've just been alerted that despite House Democrats relenting on extending bans on offshore drilling and oil shale in the continuing resolution (CR) appropriations bill, Democrat Senate Leader Harry Reid has decided to sneak an extension of the oil shale ban through as Congress fights over the financial bailout. Oil shale in America's West is estimated to hold be between 800 billion and 2 trillion barrels of oil -- that is more than three times the proven oil reserves in Saudi Arabia alone.

Here is the text of Reid's proposed new ban on oil shale, that he is trying to add as an amendment to the CR or move seperately as a "stimulus" package, or we should say an anti-stimulus package if this is included.

Sec 1602 continues ban on oil shale. The language follows:

 http://demint.senate.gov/public/_files/2008-09-24_Reid_Amendment.pdf

SEC. 1602. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, including section 152 of division A of H.R. 2638 (110th Congress), the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Continuing Appropriations Act, 2009, the terms and conditions contained in section 433 of division F of Public Law 110–161 shall remain in effect for the 19 fiscal year ending September 30, 2009.

It would be an insult to all Americans if Senate Democrats worked to bailout Wall Street while damaging our future prosperity by banning development of vast energy reserves in oil shale.

I've given up hope of Congress ever pulling their collective heads from their collective anal orifices.  We have vast reserves of oil shale here in the US, we could use them to help us become independent from foreign oil....but no.....Congress in their infinite wisdom (sarcasm heavy) tries to block exploitation of our own natural resources.

Putting politics aside for a second....

Does anyone understand what his thinking would be on this?

Is it better we send money to Saudi Arabia or Montana?

:huh,

Think maybe they want to run the Arabians out of their oil? Then they have to buy it from us.
They couldn't be thinking that. Sorry nevermind that would actually take independant thought on the part of our politicians and then collective agreement. Never happen.

Take away the oil sales from the Saudi's and they have nothing but sand and a few resort hotels.
Nice thought huh?

Reid doesn't understand his thinking on this:  How am I supposed to?

Despite the fact that Congress currently has an 18% approval rating (and I dont trust that it is really that high) voters will put the same worthless individuals back into power in November. Maybe five or six individuals will get canned but thats about it. How do we wake the voters up? I have been asking myself that question for forty years.

Do I get even a virtual asprin for the research and scrounging to bring things like this to the board and the fact that I do read the whole bills before I start pointing fingers at politicians?..... :D

Yep, props to you... I get DeMints newsletter but I didn't post that.  When our economy is in such trouble, we need to have as much cheap energy from our own sources as possible, as quickly as possible.  I emailed Reid on this but since I am not from his state I am sure it will be ignored.

Over here they have thankfully also stopped drilling and searching for oil in many areas close to shore and in areas were fish make more fish :D. Protecting the enviroment is far more important than to export cheap oil and refined products to overseas markets. Perhaps a greedy way to think im glad the preassure is on to keep it that way.
