Spore
« on: September 27, 2008, 11:25:19 AM »
 :O This game, looks AMAZING.

Anybody know if it'll be like any normal RTS's... (Make troops/vehicles, kill others, get different resources, reproduce, but on a.... GALACTIC SCALE?)

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8372603330420559198  The vid is a little long... And the beginning is boring... but you can see just how in depth this game is...

Starting from a little cell, you transform into bigger and more intelligent life forms, any way you wish...

Then, create cities... blow up OTHER cities, and then travel to different worlds (which, by the way, are created by other players) where you can make another life form, or conquer the planet.

It looks amazing.
There was once a saying that goes "If you put an infinite amount of monkeys in a room with an infinite amount of typewriters, eventually they will produce something worth reading."

The internet has proved this wrong.

I think its fantastic that computer games have 'evolved' to this point and this looks like a purchase that could present many many unproductive hours of fun sitting behind a computer. I have a problem with the 'evolutionary' aspects of life as presented in the game but what the heck its just another chink in the armor of creationism. I predict schools will use this as a form of extra-curricular education and that half a dozen Asians will die suddenly after marathon gaming sessions and one American child will suicide after a catastrophic loss of progress in 'Spore.'

I have gotten Spore and have played it quite alot.  With the game as it came I had a few problems.  All my gripes were fixed on the patch.   However I am running a sub standard Video card.  NIVIDA 5200.  After the patch I developed some graphics problems and a slow down of the game.  Deleted and reloaded game couple of times, finally went back to no patch.  Plays the way it did before the patch.  I still need to submit this problem to EA.  I do think the game is very good.  And will be what I will like when I can get Uber Video card.

It has phone-home authentication DRM, which means that the game will quit working when they shut down their spore authentication servers, and you can't install/play it offline.

That means I won't buy it.  I have games that I've played off and on for 15 years now, on 10 or more computers, from companies that don't exist anymore.  If they used the same style of DRM, I wouldn't be able to keep playing them.

To he11 with spore and the retards that saddled it with DRM.  There are plenty of alternative uses of my time and money that don't have such restrictions.

And before anyone replies that they "fixed" the DRM, no they didn't.  They still use the same DRM, it still runs in the background on your system, and it will still prevent re-installation offline or after they turn off the servers.  The only thing they did was let you install it 5 times before you have to get on the phone to call and beg permission to use the game you already "bought".  No thanks, that's not a fix.

It's a rather boring game IMO and more geared towards the casual gamer.  It wll still make EA a crap load of money and they'll milk that IP for everything they can squeeze out of it.
