Roundtable Discussion on This Week w/George Steph.
« on: September 28, 2008, 10:38:16 AM »
George Will, Rob Reich, Newt Gingrich, and the Post's Steve Pearlstein Roundtable discussion on the bailout was pretty good.

Hell, even Newt and Reich were on the same page on some of the issues, which is scary for both sides of the aisle.  I will say, whatever the next administration is, it should put Newt on the staff, and possibly Reich as well.  At least there would be earnest and intelligent debates by both of those gentlemen.

Reich had some salient points, but when he went back to his muscle memory days of the 90's, Pearlstein did a nice job of questioning him.  but Newt and Reich did agree on infastructure issues.  I liked Newt back in the Contract days, and he's gotten better with time, IMO.  I wouldn't say he's mellowed, but time has given him perspective it seems.  Of course, that's the first time I've watched him in years, so who knows....gonna have to go and read his latest books now to see.

I thought Pearlstein crystallized the current crisis (as it exists now not so much how we got here) well, as a two prong problem....the solvency issue and followed by (because of tightening credit) a liquidity issue.

Do I think either Presidential Candidate has a grasp of this crisis?  No freakin' way!

The next Presidentency will be defined by the people he surrounds himself with (more so than in the past), and by the looks at the choices both of them have made so far, that is a damn scary outlook.

I truly hope the next President gets a bi-partison economic team together, better yet, a non-partison team made up of non-politicians so he can take idealogy out of the debate and it would be a debate of economic theory...(Kensian vs. Monetary)......
