Hispano MK 11 and the Hispano MK V
« on: September 29, 2008, 07:02:27 PM »
I see the Tempest has the MK V version and the Spits have the MK11, Is there much difference between them ? Possibly the MK V might have a faster rate of fire for example?

The Spitfire Mk Vb has the Hispano Mk I.  Spitfire Mks VIII, IX, XIV, XVI, Seafire Mk II, Hurricane Mk IIc, Typhoon Mk Ib and Mosquito Mk VI all carry the Hispano Mk II.  The US P-38s G, J, L and the F4U-1C carry the M2 20mm cannon which is the same as the Hispano Mk II for game purposes.  Balisitically and for rate of fire the Hispano Mk I, Mk II and M2 20mm cannons are identical.

The Tempest Mk V carries the Hispano Mk V.

Hispano Mk I/Mk II/M2 20mm: 50kg gun, 20x110 ammo, 250cm long, 170cm barrel, 600rpm, 880m/sec muzzle velocity, 50,300 joules at the muzzle.

Hispano Mk V: 42kg gun, 20x110 ammo, 220cm long, 140cm barrel, 750rpm, 850m/sec muzzle velocity, 46,900 joules at the muzzle.

The Hispano II that we have in AH has a rof closer to 11rps than the 10rps Tony Williams gives.

The official RoF for the Hisso II was 600 rpm and this seems to have been the actual average. Of course, as with any automatic gun this could vary a lot depending on the circumstances. I have read that even straight from the factory, the RoF could be anything between 550 and 650 rpm due to production tolerances. The quality of the maintenance the guns received also made a difference.

It seems that the US 20mm AN-M2 guns ran a bit faster, at anything between 600 and 700 rpm.
