How do you tell who has a connect problem?
« on: April 05, 2000, 03:20:00 PM »
Last night I was in my 17 and had to man the rear gun against someone approaching from my level six (and I forgot to turn on film  )

As he approached, there did not seem to be any funny movements of his plane -- except later in the conflict I thought a saw a few micro-warps.

From my point of view I scored a couple of hits on him at d1.0 or so, and he scored a few on me (started to leak fuel).

He backed off a bit and I went and dropped a few bombs (all the while I was not being hit, although it was 15 or so seconds).

Went back to the rear gun and saw he was at d800, started shooting again, and suddenly his plane went nose up as if he was going to evade -- but he was *not* climbing, just in a nose-up position, hanging there -- so I lit up his underside real good.

At that point I began to fear my connection was bad because I thought I was lighting him up good but he was not backing off and he was not even smoking or going down.  I even had time to apologize if I was warping to him (no response).

I decided to stop firing at him (just a personal preference, don't want anyone to think I would take advantage of a bad connect).  It took a while but he finally pinged me enough that I had to bail.

I am pretty sure I scored at least 27 hits on him (according to the score page).  Hey, it's early in the tour and I have not flown much yet so I knew my score ahead of time.

After I went down, I asked him if I looked like I was warping/laggin, and I got an answer like "No you looked fine to me".  I then asked if I had hit him but did not get a reply.

So how can you tell?  I really think one of us must have had a problem.

More techical folks that are rehearsed in Networking can answer  this better than I, but my "poor mans" method is this: If more than 2 people that I am viewing seem to be warping then it's probably my connect.

Actually I have wondered about this any number of times.

Light so one up real good, nothing happens.

Sometimes you never see any tracers, but hear damage pings.

The other plane just is not pointing at you and you get shot down.

Etc...

It has to all be internet stuff.
