A Hero has come home....
« on: October 02, 2008, 04:17:22 PM »
I'm sure this will get moved to O'Club, or some other place that we don't read but I couldn't help but share with you some of this beautiful lady coming back to anchor at her home station... W45th st.  NYC   :salute

CVS-11, the USS Intrepid...

. . . .

....

....

Essex class carrier commissioned in 1943, decommissioned in 1974 and she was the first carrier to launch an aircraft using the steam catapult (1954)!  Served in the Pacific theater until the end of the war!  Famous for the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Spent the last 2 years in Bayonne, NJ & Staten Island, NY being renovated and refurbished.  Today I took a 2 hour lunch to hang out with her for a little while while the tugs brought her up the Hudson at a determined 2 knots.

I always regreted not joining the Navy. Choose Marines instead. When I was a kid I used to watch those flat tops sailing out of Norfolk. My grandpa and dad used to build and repair them. Very nice shots. Makes me wish I were there. :salute

30 minute drive from the Entrepid... maybe I'll post some pics on here when I get the chance.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

Fantastic pictures of a fine ship with an exceptional history  :salute

However, one small point - Essex may have been the first US carrier to launch an aircraft with a steam catapult, but their use was pioneered by the British during trials aboard HMS Perseus starting in 1949.

I've been on the Intrepid several years ago when I lived in NY.  I'd like to see it again after the refurbishing.  I was really impressed with the F6F parked below deck.

If you're ever in NY it's definitely worth the time to go look her over.  They also have several other WWII ships moored there that you can go poke around on.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.
