Think I'm done with scoring
« on: October 08, 2008, 04:13:33 AM »
When I first started on AW score did not matter. In fact it did not matter all the way into 2002 when I left AH 1. Then I came back in late May of 2007 and joined the Aces in June where I thought it would take a while to get some of my old skills back, but it really didn't take long at all  :o.  I began looking at score and wondered how in the world could I possibly rank higher than some of the better players in the game. I took the next month and analyzed score and saw what I had been doing right without even trying. Some categories were lower than others so the next month I tried improving on them and reached the teens with a little extra forethought, then I kinda lost interest.

Anyone can rank in the 1000's but to rank in the 500's you need to be taking bases. Ranking in the 200's takes a few more skills and the proper plane allocation but to get in the teens you really have to put some time in and watch everything you do.....or take the thumbs down, second acct. bogus short cut  :furious
Trying for this (the teens) takes the fun out of the game if you wanted to keep it up month after month and i definitely would not recommend that if you want to keep things fun. It will become more like work and why would you want to come here and work for nothing.

By my forth month I had all the tricks in play and tried to apply them to a squad. I kept some notes and passed them on but in the end it made some people very miserable. Score has it's dangers and like the game itself, can also become addicting... so beware. If done right it can be very satisfying and takes very little fun from the game if any at all.

Now I am beginning to have a different view. I'm tired of  base taking and have found it's much more fun to break hordes up that are trying to take the bases. I don't want to think about score anymore and just want to get some good kills, but score is inevitable and my base taking interest may never completely fade.

For some score is kind of a mystery. Although in a ways I am through with score, if any of you want I can tell you how. Use it for yourself or for your squad or just pretend it does not exist and keep yourself happier. Additional online crack will be supplied by PM only :rofl

I agree with you Tool, defending a base is much more satisfying than taking. It's one thing the LynchMob loves to do. It's such a good feeling to bust up NOEs :aok

Overall rank is merely the act of performing a tedious and annoying laundry list of chores. Just do what you find fun and personally satisfying, if that happens to improve rank as an incidental side-effect, so be it. If it does not, oh well. Pursuing rank if you do not enjoy the constituent activities required is a sure-fire recipe for burnout and incessant whining, pissing and moaning.

I'm curious. Why do you disagree? Tool made some good sense in his viewpoint. I would like to hear what you think.

I maybe have 1 capture a month and still manage to get pretty low. You can get low with just killing and blowing stuff up, most likely not on the front page but pretty low.

Take my current (105) tour's score (shane08)...  I haven't done any base-taking (with troops). I fly med bombers and just DB them (can't be bothered to re-learn the bombsite). I up and die repeatedly in GV's (i suck).

I do try and get at least something in each of the 4 main categories.  I'm not playing for rank per se. I do all kinds fo stuff from base defese, interdiction and jabo as well as non-plane stuff to a lesser extent.

Last tour's (104) is comparable and 718 overall.

By base-taking, I'm guess he means be involved attacking bases as opposed to simple milkrunning (his thumb's down).  Of course actually doing the goon/m3 troop capture sure does bump your rank, as does hitting something with a PT's rockets.

So it's fairly easy to get inside the 1,000 mark as long as you do at least 1 thing good out of the 4.

Getting inside the top 500 or 100 is just doing more of the same, getting down to top 10 requires actively manipulating your sorties to achieve the desired stats. This doesn't mean it has to be done "lamely" but I think we can agree the majority of top 10ers can be accused of doing this in a sense.
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.
I'm not perfect, but I am closer to it than you are.

i just like the ensueing fights that can be found within 15-20 miles or closer of a base that's being attacked. doesn't matter if i'm defending or taking......as long as there's a fight going on.
was a fun one in mw between a30 and a27 last night.

What?  How can you be tired of base taking?  That system of game play has only been in place for a little more than a decade! ;)

I rarely capture. I prefer to furball or a great 1 vs 1 or 2 or 3.

I bomb very little.
I attack when being hit by GVs and planes.
I GV terribly.

You have to have a pretty even mix of activities to keep a decent ranking although, as noted, just because someone has a high ranking doesn't mean he's all that much better than you.

Same goes the other way around. I remember being shocked a few years ago when Greebo seemed to be cleaning my clock fairly regularly in his F6. I went to check his stats and saw he was rated something like 5000(???). Looking closer I could see he was always flying in Attack mode so he scores didn't average out right.

So, you need to do a good mix of things to get a decent score. That can be problematic when you don't like to do things like bomber runs. Takes too much effort for me, those b24 runs, but I'll do them on occasion if only to get a bump in my score.

That said, I don't really care too much about my rankings anymore. I pay more attention to my stats, like kills per hour, hit percentage and such. Still, if I feel I've been doing pretty good and I see my ranking is like 3 or 4 hundred, I might just take the time to do a bomb run. Since I don't bomb often, if at all, I've found just one bomb run can raise my ranking from 500 down to 300, at least for a day or so.

But, like I've said, I've paid less and less attention to my rankings and pretty much try to play the game as I want to now. I've even gotten to the point where I'll regularly bail out of a plane if there's no action where I'm at and I don't have the patience to land. Never used to do that much before because I didn't want to screw up my score (although I'm not sure just how that affects score: bailing, I mean).

So, if any of you see me dump a plane for no apparent reason, it's usually because I'm too impatient to hassle with landing.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I nearly always prefer defending as opposed to attacking, although I'll do either depending on the circumstances.

I guess I won't reach the apex of the food chain anytime soon as far as rank goes. I love staying right in the heat of it until I'm out of ammo or blood, or I manage to get a defective plane that keeps losing vital parts. This game is too much fun to try to micro- manage one's score.

Thanks for the response Shane. It sounds like too much work for me. :aok
