FRAPS
« on: October 09, 2008, 04:14:59 PM »
Ok...I know I've asked before, but I can't find the thread.  I'm needing help with FRAPS.

1.) Do I film in-gam or do i film from the FilmViewer?

2.) How do I set up a key for it to start/stop filming?

I know, I'm an idiot, but I'm running short of time and need just a quick reference.  Thanks in advance!  #S#

1) You can do either or.  The only benefit of doing it in game is being able to record TrackIR movements not recorded in AH films.  Otherwise, AH Film viewer won't interfer w/ your flying (mainly a hit on your FPS while in game).
2) Click on the "Movies" Tab and in the Video Capture Hotkey box, click in that box, and then hit a key you want to use to record.  I believe F12 is default.  But I use keys less likely to interfer with the AH game/Film Viewer when i push record.  I.e. I hit X key and it records my fraps movies and sets autopilot.  Personally, I use "9" key.

Fulmar,
I believe a while back you told me that FRAPS would really bog down in film viewer if my video card wasn't strong enough, but someone else told me the other day that it would be fine.  With only a 64mb card, whaddaya think?

Fraps can bog down your system in the viewer.  This can make the film jumpy as the fps goes down.

One trick is to record everything with fraps at half speed, then speed it up with the editing software.

Hmm, I'll have to try that.  Running fraps brought my already mediocre frame rate to about 2.

It wasn't too bad.  I could tell it was a little jerky, but since the game is more CPU dependent, I think whatever processor you have helped make up some of the difference.  When you hit the record button and the frames per second number turns to red, ideally it should be 30+, actually the higher the better (you can see a difference between film at 30 fps and 60 fps).

That's the conversation I was referring to.  But someone else told me that FRAPS really shouldn't hurt the framerate in film viewer that much.

Fraps will hurt the film viewer FPS less than compared to live recording in game.  The amount of FPS 'hit' you take depends on your system.  In heavy terrain/action areas, while recording my FPS can go down to 30 or so in the film viewer.  When I do have these low FPS issues, i slow the playback rate to .5 and then double the speed of the film in my film viewer.  This allows a non-jerky recording.
