Mix the Bases Up!
« on: October 14, 2008, 07:58:53 PM »
The air bases, vehicle bases, the ports, etc etc etc.  They are all the same.  When we fly up on a base, we know exactly how to line up so we can make 2 passes to take out the ord, etc.  Same same same.

How difficult would it be to develope another 3-4 (or more) styles of bases?  Perhaps maybe even swap out the bumber of strats each base has as well.  Vary the number of ack, manned ack, maybe even vary the amount of ord that is needed to destroy certain start targets (100-500lbs instead of ALL of them being 250lbs 'cept for ack guns being 100lbs).

I can understand keeping the strat targets the same (city, ammo factory, radar factory, traiing center, etc), but swapping out a few of the base strat locations cant be all that much of a coding nightmare, can it?

ya know, i read the title of this thread, and imagined just random base placement for each country.. random ownership at the beginning of a map -- knight bases scattered, bish bases scattered, etc -- all over the map, perhaps a few uncapturables near hq..  imagine what that would do :)

as for your actual request, I like it!  :aok

-Give base sizes meaning as follows, tweaking map layouts to create focal points and logical distribution of field types as necessary:

Large bases (w/ 3 vehicle hangers) = any aircraft can takeoff including 4 engine bombers.
Medium bases (w/ 2 vehicle hangers) = No 4 engine bombers.
Small bases (one vehicle hanger) = No twin engine level bombers, twin engine dive bombers and fighters are ok (anything that can use "attack" mode)

-Make task groups far more durable, larger and regenerate more quickly from damage relative to its proximity to a friendly port, making taking ports more important in general. Make their antiaircraft fire far more effective vs. large, slow moving, higher alt targets and less so against fast, small, lower alt targets.

-Make vehicle spawn points to towns from its parent field's VH's as described in base differentiation above. Tweak the range of fields from their towns accordingly.

-Give the whole zone base infrastructure already in place some real teeth to go hand in hand with making factories far more important, make only large airfields eligible to be zone fields.

I suggested having hvy bombers restricted to medium and large airfields and almost was lynched.  I think that idea is an awesome idea.  it makes sense.  Hvy bombers were not deployed on or near the front lines for obvious reasons.  They needed security, a large runway, and distance to gain teh alt needed.  The suicide Lanc-Stuka that takes off from an enemy small airfield only 15 miles away if getting old.

Vehicle spawns should be varied more dispersed.  I like the idea of being able to pick a different spawn point to ward off the campers.

I think it should be suicide to get anywhere near a fleet in a single plane and near suicide to get anywhere near in a flight of bombers.  One person should not be able to bring down a CV.  It should take a minimum of 4-5 single planes and 2-3 flights of bombers, otherwise the fleet ack defense should be able to eat them up.

I think this would be a real nightmare. Right now terrain authors place the base type, its town, and its spawn points in their precise locations. To make a randomizing feature would probably take a while seeing as now the game engine places the bases, base direction, town, town direction, spawn points, and spawn directions randomly. And all of this while trying to keep an acceptable distance between the other bases on one country's side.

It certainly would be nice, yet I believe it would be a real nightmare to put together.

Some maps have the bases rotated so u dont know which way to line up, but mixed up all over would be a nightmare. Although i like the idea of multiple spawns ot would reduce the amount of spawn camping and induce more gv battles.
just talk about random stuff but please stay on topic

I titled this thread wrong.. it should have read something like "Alter the strat targets on the bases!"

I do not mean to have the bases mixed up like checker board, but rather the layout of the bases and their ack and strats and maybe even the hangers moved around a bit.  As it is now... they are just rubber stamped.

Only thing I really agree with is the limitation of bombers idea, and maybe the TG idea.
