Midway
« on: October 18, 2008, 02:25:54 PM »

Well, the movie not the map. Since I know we have a few "Midway" and "Tora-Tora-Tora"
fans, thought this would be better posted here.

Thought of this after seeing "Midway" last weekend. It occured to me
that the part of "Bull Halsey" was all wrong.

First image is Halsey, second is Glenn Ford, third is Robert Mitchum who
played the part of Halsey in Midway. Ford played Admiral Spruance.

Physically, Mitchum might not have been a match for Halsey, but character wise, Mitchum was an excellent choice. Spencer Tracy was already dead. James Whitmore, who played Halsey in Tora, Tora, Tora, would have been a good choice as well.

James Stewart was not in Midway, at least not that I've seen, and I saw it in the theater, and dozens of times since. It was the first movie filmed and shown in "sensurround", theaters had to buy and install special equipment to show the movie when it was first released. I think the other movie filmed and shown in "sensurround" was A Bridge Too Far.

I know that AMC added a scene to Midway. I'm pretty sure is was the Coral Sea Operation.

Most movies you see these days, on the toob, are all chopped up...
AMC is terrible at this... Although at certain times they do show them
uncut... Then you realize how many scenes are missing...

In Midway, I found it unusual that they used film of SB2U Vindicators
instead of SBD's, for the background in the Cockpit scenes...

Although in RL a squad of Marine Vindicators did attack the IJN carriers
from Midway... First time in combat, They were wiped out...

Typical Hollywood fare, If ya get the gist of the story, good enough for
the public...

Jimmy Stewart was in only 1 military movie, Strategic Air Command.  Of course he served in real life. :salute
He's a lover, not a fighter... but he's also a fighter, so don't get any ideas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRaTekm9Ak8  http://one_foggy.tripod.com/sounds/afu_jokeson.wav

I think Glen Ford was a great pick to be Spurance. Plus like Virg said Mitchum was a great choice character wise to be Halsey.
That was the second time Fonda had played the Nimitz character. Although not referred as Nimitz in name he certainly played the role of Nimitz in the John Wayne movie, In Harms Way.

Fail,Fail and Fail.  Glenn Ford would be a better Halsey any day
over Mitchum. I've seen films of Halsey, Mitchum does not capture it.
Not that I dont like Mitchum,he's just not Halsey material.

However,Fonda did play the part of "Nimitz" pretty good.

Since Halsey didn't participate in the BOM what part did Mitchum fail to capture?

I blame my 15yr old daughter for that one. She uses it on me.

True he didnt participate, but just for appearances,I still would
have picked Ford for the part. I'd have to think about "Spruance".

We need a new category, for all great old war movies, that we grew up up with and were glued to the seats watching them but were not 100% accurate. The combination of the favorite old time actors, the story lines were enough for me.  I remeber In Harms Way the first time I saw it at the theater, wow, I was 12 years old.

The Longest Day, Midway, Battan and the like.  It bugs the crap outta me to hear people rip some of them because the rivet count was off.

LOL, understand completely. The main reason I think Ford did great as Spruance is because his acting style fits the Spruance mold. Quiet, thoughtful, and efficient.
I agree  with you physically he's close to Halsey, I think Whitmore was a great Halsey in  Tora Tora Tora. ;)

You THINK. Have you SEEN Ford play Halsey? If not, you've merely made an assumption. The part was not really written as vintage Halsey anyway. There wasn't a whole lot of room for Mitchum to work in.
