Are icons ASL or AGL limited?
« on: February 02, 2000, 07:56:00 AM »
When flying NOE, are the inviso icons limited by sea level or ground level? How is DAR affected by this as well?
If its sea level, it makes the canyons very difficult to make a sneak attack thru.
Are the canyons blind to radar, and if not, can anyone see a work around for this?
 Looking for feedback.

You know I kinda like the idea of canyons blinding radar. Would help with the overall strategy and require more sweeps by fighters defending a field.

the canyons are not radar blind.

the reduced icon range and being below dar are both at 500ft AGL from what HT has said in the arena, and me and my crew have done many a low level mission and flown right under bandits to accomplish our mission goals.

BTW, if you're hiding on the deck and see a bandit looking for you, start sweating when you see his icon at d3.4k.  Every time I've picked up a low down and gone down to investigate I get thier icon at d3.3k

I would think that line of sight modeling for each radar tower might be a bit much.. but the current effect is better anyway...los or not you can sneak 3k away from a base..

"I would think that line of sight modeling for each radar tower might be a bit much"

Yeah to do this in real time would be a pain in the ass.

But it would be pretty easy for HTC to do it offline.  Then they could figure out some 3-D chunks of airspace (like in the canyons) that are "no radar zones".  I.e. there is no radar anywhere that will be able to see a con flying in these regions.  Then when you fly a plane through one of these, your FE could check its position vs. the map of no-radar zones and tell the server whether to draw your plane on the enemy radar or not.

This will be a little slower than the current AGL method which is basically a freebee because the FE is already checking AGL altitude all the time anyways to check for ground collisions.

True...there are not many places that have coverage by more then 3 towers. so you might be able to pre map it for each tower then you would have three comparisons per plane.
