Rebates...Hate em!

Wow, I recently purchased a couple of items that had rebates attached. It looks like I'm going to get them but be forewarned. The OCZ rebate for the PC Power and Cooling had a guantlet to go through. I had to go to their site, get some numbers, correctly put like a 12 code number in a form plus put the invoice # on the form. It was number mania! Also the rebate had to be received in 12 days from the invoice date. Remember it takes 3 days to receive your items from NewEgg. I really really think they don't want to pay. My advice send those rebates as soon as the item arrives at the door.

Over the years I've actually had pretty good luck with rebates.  The ones I didn't receive were maybe for like $8 on a 50 pack of CD-R's (back in the day when CD-R's were $3 after MIR for a 50 pack).  Anyways, one of the better responses I got was with my Viewsonic LCD.  Came with a $30 rebate and I must have forgot to send in the receipt copy.  I got a letter a couple weeks later stating that I didn't include it and that I can still send it that copy, which I did and I eventually received my $30 check.

Did all that. Went to the post office and had them post mark it in front of me so I knew it was postmarked on time.

After waiting and waiting. They send me a card in the mail saying it wasnt postmarked by the required date. no rebate

Like I said. I'd been forwarned about them and their rebates. Which is why I had the postage done in front of me (literally)as opposed to just slapping a stamp on the envelope, and dropping it in the mailbox.

You have to be careful to print the right rebate form when dealing with Newegg. I ordered two video cards one at a time and the first card was at the last of the month and newegg changed the form three days later (without posting a link to it). I had already printed the form the day I ordered but two weeks later when I ordered the second card I noticed the original link was missing and made a note to make sure I printed the rebate form the day of the order.

OCZ has a bad rep for rebates. And they just bought out another well-known company and now that company, (can't remember name), has a bad rep for rebates.

Before going with any rebate, I always do a search on the company to see how they've been handling their rebates. BFG has a decent rep so far, and so does Corsair, except that they take their time about sending your money.

When I bought my power supply, I decided not to buy a PC Power and Cooling supply mainly because of their bad rep for rebates. The other company OCZ bought out was a memory company, (if I remember correctly), and I passed on their memory also, for the same reason.

As for OCZ, I went to their site, and the site for the company they bought and filled out their contact forms advising them, that I would not be buying any of their products because of their bad rebate rep and I wouldn't be recommending their products to my clients either. If more people would do that, they might just change their ways... The only way to get companies like this to treat their customers better, is to vote with your wallet, no matter how good the product is. After all there are always alternatives, that are just about as good.

As for Stores, I do most of my shopping, (when necessary), at Best Buy, mainly because they got rid of rebates completely.

The whole rebate scam is just starting to hit NZ now. Though our commerce commission is giving it a very close once over, as it may contravene our fair trading act thankfully (we got some decent consumer laws about 20 years ago to stop this kinda rubbish).

Lets face it, the only reason for rebates is to offer a discount that you may not have to honour.

I got both PC Power and Cooling (OCZ) power supply and Asus video card rebates.  They did arrive on a semi-geological time scale however.

I sell OCZ products amongst, eVGA, Asus, Mushkin, etc.  Rebates are not handled in-house.  It is most often an outside company tracking sales or promotions.  In my opinion we all like to save monies, but if your buying a product strictly for the rebate, you have lost you mind.  How about the 12v rails and how many and at what amp do they operate at, or memory what are the timings.

Forget rebates and buy what you need for your system and get the best you can afford.  Processors for instance, Microcenter (national chain) consistently beats newegg's prices, heck I am a dealer and go to Microcenter for them over my suppliers.

Never depend on the rebate, when a 3rd party gets involved, it is unusual to work out well.
