After 45min, game freezes....
« on: October 29, 2008, 11:03:41 AM »
Gents...
Not a puter wiz....

My hardware:
AMD Athlon 64 X 2 dual Core 4.2MHz
Western Digital 250GB Sata 16MB(X2)
Asus M2N-E AM2 PCIE MB
Atrix case
Echo Star 680-watt 24pin dual fan
Corsair ( 2 X 1GIG DDR2-667) Kit
Asus GeForce 7950 HDTV 512MB
Sound Blaster Audigy X-FI Platinum
View Sonic VX922 19in LCD

Software: Windows XP

Flying hardware: CH all around ! Stick/throttle and pedals
                       TrackIRII

Been playing since fall 2006
Run FSautostart which brings it down low 30s
And NEVER had any problems. dogfights/furballs and details were great. No stutter ....

Stopped playing the game for approx 6-8mths.
Teen son(University) plugged/installed in wireless internet for his new laptop.
I switch the wires back to original so I get direct connection when game time....

Since 2mths now, after 30-45min of play, my game freezes while in flight.
Dark screen. Seems to be a picture taken from airspace looking at earth surface/ stars ....

I need to hit the "restart" button and log back in for another 30-45min of gameplay
without interruption...

Anyone can tell me where to start ?

sounds like a heat issue - open up your case - see if it is full of dust- make sure fan is running
may need to add a fan

Could also be the AMD dual core bug which there is a patch for. If your wireless connection hooks up through a USB wire and you are not using the wireless then its a good idea to pull that USB wire out.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

That is what I am thinking. Also is that overclocked?

I would dial back the clock rate of the CPU (since when did an AMD CPU come stock at 4.2Ghz? or did you transpose the numbers?).  It does indeed sound heat and/or timing related.

Thanks all !
Will open box and clean as suggested.
If it was a heating problem, why would the gameplay be ok for another 45min after reloging back in ?

Skuzzy...
Didn't change anything. 4.2MHz is what I started(new) with !!!

Will let you know the outcome of a good cleaning !

phil, something is not right then. 3.2 is the highest AMD produced stock as far as I know. You may want to check your settings and down load a tempature program.

Like Getback said, 4.2Ghz is not a stock clock rate for any AMD CPU.  Someone sell you an overclocked computer?

Make sure you dedust in particular your CPU (has a big radiator with a fan on it, make sure the fan and "fins/blades" of the radiator don't have dust bunnies gunking up the airflow over them), graphics card (typically a card that is perpendicular to the large mother board that the CPU was mounted on, and typically it is found just below your CPU.  Typically it has another radiator and fan on it's GPU, about 1/4-1/3 the size of the one on your CPU, clean it just like the larger CPU), the power supply, fans and basically anywhere you see dust bunnies.

Avoid using anything moist to wipe out the dust on the inside (its OK to use to wipe down the outside of the case, just dont drip anything through to the inside), this can cause damage to your PC.  My preferred methods are a vaccum with a small enough attachment that wont suck up anything else besides the dust I'm going for or a can of dust-off in a safe outdoor location (so you don't end up adding a lot of dust to your inside environment).

Other than popping the cover on the case to get inside, no disassembly of your computer should be required for this.

Phil I to have a Wireless router that the Kids use. When I play I disconnect the router. What I do is plug wire for modem directly to computer, then turn both computer and Modem off ....... wait a minute then turn both back on. I had the same problem to mostly Disco's. Hope it helps.

You know.... This is a long shot, but worth a try if it fixes the problem.

Go to your Network Connections panel, typically accessible from the Control Panel (Start>Control Panel.  Or Start>Settings>Control Panel). Inside here make sure you have the buttons at the top that read, "File, Edit, View, etc..." If not, right click in the area they should be and press the option, "Menu." (At least I think it's menu, running a 2000 here.)

Afterward go to Advanced>Advanced Settings (This is still in the Network Connections area.)

Now, make sure the connection you are using is listed on top of every other connection in the, "Connections" menu. If it isn't, move it to the top, then press OK. If it already was, then this was obviously not the problem.
