Welcome Irnbru!

Don't worry, almost everyone was overwhelmed the same way when first coming to AH2. There's quite a lot of things to learn and to discover, which on the other hand means you can have fun for years

The thing you are looking for right now is the homepage of the Aces High Trainer Corps: http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/
All the info about how to get started, setting up views, controls and much more can be found there.

And yes, while it's possible to play this game with mouse alone, you will greatly benefit from getting a joystick.

Have fun!

Definetley worth it to get a joystick for this game, especialy if you're going to be wanting to move up from leasure flying to dogfighting.  You seem to be figureing out this game though, it is a simulator and you need to first learn and get compforitable with flight... the whole "learn to walk before you run" thing, learning to walk in this game can be overwhelming, but very fun and rewarding to pull it off well, and then you begin to learn how to run (dogfight) and it keeps getting beter.  From there you build on your combat strategies and skills and familiarity with your plane(s) of choice.

I use a mouse and keyboard also. Just depends of how it feels to ya.

I tried a joystick and hated it. but I love a mouse.

Use "A" and "D" for rudders.

Everything will come together

Most people will find the game easier with a decent joystick.  However there are a number of mouse users in the game, some are quite accomplished dog fighters.

I do believe that the average player will benefit from a quality joystick.

For landings :

A great place to learn stuff:

Regarding a controller/joystick. Would you rather drive you car and steer it with a crescent wrench or a steering wheel?

A joystick is much more natural and IMO easier to learn with. That's not to say you can't do it with a mouse, you can, but it will generally take you longer and can be more frustrating.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

Get a joystick and rudders and hang out in the training arena. And remember all the other thousands of us were in your exact place at one time. Get with the trainers, but even if your not with a trainer the training arena is a great place to hang out.

Ive spent countless hours there just practicing landings, gunning from bombers, gunnery skills, taking planes up and putting each one thru violent manuevers to learn their limits. The TA is the best asset in the game.

Be patient dude. It will all come to you. But I think to really set yourself up for growth you really need a stick, rudders, and mic/audio setup.

I was under the impression that film viewer came standard with the game download.
