Memorable Dogfights
« on: October 28, 2008, 05:19:24 PM »
Yesterday, I replaced my old, venerable SideWinder Pro with an st290. I was in two duels I will never forget. Both of them were against spixteens, but these guys weren't dweebs by ANY standard. The first one was over water, and went feet dry and feet wet a good number of times. I can't remember any specifics, but this guy was a really good stick.

The second, I remember like it just happened.

I had upped my own spixteen, mostly because I had gotten tired of taking forever to do anything. I was near a coastline, and dived over a shallow cliff. There, I spotted a spit coming feet dry towards a good sized mountain. I pursued, and it soon became clear this guy was a DAMN good stick. We hadn't seen each other for more than 15 seconds before the both of us were screaming uphill, dodging trees only 10 feet below us. I clearly remember raising my left wing about 10 degrees to barely miss a treetop. Immediately after that, he rolled inverted and dived down the face of a 500 yard cliff, and I followed on his heels. He jinked and turned, and I stuck with him, taking a few potshots, only barely missing now instead of being way off, thanks to the st290's rudder twist control. We went on this way for a good five minutes, jinking and turning and diving, all while sticking to the cliff like glue. I never did shoot him down, only getting an assist after another friendly fighter came and dived on him from 1k to 2k alt above us after I had about a second of lag.

:salute I salute that spit driver, whoever he is. That guy is one damn good stick.

I was in a D40 IB to a base I believe was on uterus map. (A6 maybe? long ago...can't remember) and I had ended up on the deck about 3-4 miles out from the enemy base. I was climbing when I saw a spit16 screaming down on me. I worked him for a good 5 minutes till he was finally co-E with me. This was probably the biggest deck fight you have ever seen, and I'm glad we got away from the action a bit.
Anyway, we were in a turn for a good couple minutes, both of us each gaining the upper hand every once in a while. I was full flaps and I bounced off the ground a few times (that's how low and slow it was), trying to fly my big plane around trees, hills on the shore, etc while the nimble spit16 was easily weaving through. I eventually heard his engine go out, I thought I was free, until I figured out taht he was simply trying to slow down. I checked my E6B very quick, only to see that my Range was 1. Right then did my engine shut off. I rolled my plane to a stop on the ground as I watched the spit go about 1.5K away from me. Then he turned around, going slow with his flaps out, and flew by me, tipped his wing and flew on home.

I dove in on Laser once, me in a pony and him in a spit16. He just stepped to the side I flew by and he hoped right in behind me and killed me dead :lol Pawz did the same thing to me with his 38. Both engagements lasted all of 2 seconds. That was like a year ago and I think about that everytime I dive in on someone now.  :lol

1)i was in an A6M5B. got into a fight with a lone A20. next i knew it was 5 vs me. A20 bugged(extended). hurri2c, another zeke, FW, spit, and the A20 returned. very memorable, as i lasted almost 3 minutes, scored a nice engine hit on the FW, hurt something on the A20, and every one of em tried HO'in me. they know who they are.   :D

2)was in my hellkitty, and see a low P38. i drop in on him, and a 2 or 3 minute fight ensues. he kilt me.  <<S>> shuffler. was a good knock down fight...no ho's. i return in the cat, now there's 2 38's flyng together, lower than me, and one a couple miles north, almost co-alt. i go for the co-alt, as he's comming this way. we merge...cold.....fight ensues. it drops alt, and next i know, it's 3 38's vs me. i died. it was shuffler again.(GGRR) for some ungodly reason, i come back AGAIN, but this time in a 38J. i see 2 lower then me together, one lower than me alone. i make a run for the lone guy.....i loaded the crap outta him, and overshot......but no kill. in the process, the other 2 were on my 6. at this point, there were some squaddies on the ground under us, calliing me to drag the 38's to them. i didn't, as this was tooo much fun.(they were only trying to help me out). shuffler got me again.

3)couple days later, i see shuffler on, and thinnnk i see his icon. we merge(cold) and in only 2 or 3 turns i'm in the tower. <<S>>soulss. 3 momre fights with him, and i THINK i was actually gaining an advantage on him. i look back, and see a 38 closing hard, so i chop throttles, and pull round into my attacker. i augered.  :rofl both shuffler, and soulss, are good fights, and great guys. got a good film from soulss......i was easily able to see my mistakes.

4)last night. off the cv near A37 was a niiiice furball. took my hellkitty up, and got myself a couple kills, and thanks to slipknt, lowzx, and a couple others in the Satans Playmates, i was actually able to land.(for the first time in a couple nights!)
5)after the cv furball, i came across stang, then bronk in their airacobras. that's in another post. they flew them VERY skillfully.

AW Big Pac, Full Real.

I am cruisin at 20k or so in my 262 .. co-alt dot .. I set sail toward it..
..con another 262!

'This oughta be interestin..wonder if he's any good in it?' I think ..and grin ..because not many are.

Well.

From 20k we fought and exchanged snap shots ..some hits on each of us, right down to the waves.
He ran outta gas first and hit the water .. I ran outta gas a few minutes later . . was a full tank fight for both of us.

Was an awesome fight Kid, and I still remember how intense it got.
At the time, Kid was T-38 instructor pilot at Williams.
He knows Jets :)
It was a blast!!

Probably the wierdest dog fight I was ever in was an AR234 vs a 262. Lusche was in the 262. This fight probably lasted for 15 minutes. You would never think it would take so long. But remember if you want the con to be on your 6 if your in an AR234. We were diving, climbing and doing somewhat of an split s ever time he got close to my tail I tried to open up with the rear cannons so the then had to swing wide one way or the other. Finally the AR ran out of fuel and lusche got the kill. Still was a great fight and Lusche was very respectful.

First one that comes to mind was a scenario in Airwarrior based on the Italian air war.  Del and I were in a pair of 417 squadron Spit Vs when we spotted a pair of 190s above and behind.  No vox in those days, and we both typed the classic "you go left, I'll go right." about the same instant.  Down they came, we broke opposite ways which I think screwed them up as each tried to turn in on one of us.  Del shot the one down that turned in on me and I got the one on him smoking and fleeing for home.

They had all the advantages but we turned it on them, and it was one of those moments where the history comes alive for just a second as you get sucked into the cockpit and it feels about as real as a flight sim can make it.

Most of the good ones are from events...

Bearkats and I reamed the Japanese air force in one frame of the Aleutians FSO.
2 38's vs 30zekes. That was a good one.

I had one some time last week against a few of 71 squadron.
i headed out to a con over the water that turned out to be 5 of the buggers all at staggerd heights.
OK first thought was run llike hell then nah its only a game so in i dived.Point guns at enemy and fire, twist turn dive climb
did this for what seemed like a few minutes trying to keep a eye on everyone and my six clear.
Not a hope in hell they were coming in every direction i got a few hits on a couple of planes and saw fuel  leaking, then i got hit from behind as i tried to turn out the way.I went down but it was a fun fight.
so i reupped and did it all over again.

Mid-war player.
My memorable fights are the ones I got frustrated sooo much. Lose or win wasn't the excuse to get upset. The fight was hard fought.... Both played their options based on what was taking place during the fight....
I review the films and to my surprised, the enemy pilots were the ones that "handed" my butt in a silver platter when I first started.
Now that was rewarding !!!!!

Salute gents !
You know who you are !
