My Gunnery Makes Me Cry
« on: October 30, 2008, 08:47:04 PM »
This was a very fun fight I had either last night or the night before. Felt like posting it just to showcase the sheer number of shots I missed and how it can ruin your entire effort.  :furious

Any tips/advice appreciated, especially on meh gunnery.

(It's a pretty long fight, 5 minutes or so.)

Your first diving attack on the Spit is from too high a deflection angle.  You need to show a little more patience, like 5 seconds more patience, and attack from his 6 o'clock area.  That kind of adjustment alone will drastically improve %.  The same goes for the second diving attack.  You go for trailing the Spit, when you should go for the lead because it's a higher % shot.  I guess what I'm saying is that showing more patience is going to improve your gunnery far more than any change of technique you can make. ;)

Do you have rudder pedals?  You have to add in a lot of rudder when you bring the 109 over the top in the vertical, but you were pretty far out of coordinated flight a number of times there.  Rudder pedals are another tool for improving gunnery %.

I've been trying to work on my timing and approaches, but I've never made a real effort to learn BnZ type fighting like I am now. It's harder to perfect than I thought it was (although I did ping both spits on their respective passes).

Uncoordinated flight though? The few times I did I did on purpose to cause overshoots. But I do fly with an old twisty, making a lot of simple shots more of a challenge keeping my joystick center than lining up on the target.

It's something I've only noticed lately, in my own films too.  When bringing the 109 over the top it frequently needs a lot more left rudder than we give it.  Usually we're too busy watching a bandit to notice.  I'm trying to make it a habit to always input left rudder in places where my films show I repeatedly lack it.  Fwiw, I don't quite understand why left rudder is need, but the ball is to the left!

You should post that in the general forum. :D

That was some nice flying.

It looked to me like both the first Spit and the Typh should have been easy kills.  I thought you had the perfect angle on both those but just missed the timing.  On everything else you never really had a guns solution.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

It wouldn't help the general consensus about you BoomNZoom types if that's what you're thinking.   :devil

Seems odd that it would be lacking the input towards torque... Combat trim perhaps? I generally leave mine on, but you may not, so it may be irrelevant. Guess I'll have to watch more of my horrid flying.

:D I have more fun losing these types of fights than I do getting kills the majority of the time.

Good point.  Maybe it's a combat trim effect at low speeds.

you werent giving yourself enough time to recover from the vertical climb you practically went back down like you would of in a rope a dope. You need to work a bit better on your convergence angles so when you come down your not immediatly behind him but somewhat above and infront of him b/c at this AoA you can see the full top outline of his plane you can pretty much light up his plane's spine. Just be calm and try BnZ with the p-51 thats what I always used and it was realiable

A 3v1 is never easy to win. You did well lasting as long as you did though. I think I would have went after the highest and fastest 1st (tippy). Then get my alt and speed back and separate the spits and try to hang them out 1 by 1. Get them away from their field ack so they don't have a quick escape. The spits in this game like to fly close to the field and most of them don't have a clue when you fight them 1v1 at alt. Take your time and set up for d200 shots while dragging them high and to your field.
Lighten up Francis

I think you did pretty good once you were screwed, I think your SA let you down before your aim did. On the other while you made a mistake in SA, the other 3 should be embarrassed by how they tried to handle you! They "horded" each trying to "steal" the kill from the other. Had they worked more as teammates you wouldn't have lasted as long.

In a 3 on 1 you have all the time in the world to "plan" your shot. Should the target last against the other two until you make your shot you will get the kill. A setup shot is almost a guaranty as apposed to the other two snapping off a shot when ever they think they "might" score a hit.
