Saxman/Whiteman
« on: November 01, 2008, 05:06:26 PM »
I went to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum today to get some pictures of their WWII Naval aircraft.
I was really hoping to get some good shots of their F4U Corsair. I was disapointed upon arriving all three of their WWII Naval aircraft the TBM, FM2, and F4U1 were displayed with the wings folded. The Corsair had it's engine out to boot. The sign in front of the Corsair identified it as a Good Year Built  FG1-D. Then I noticed the 4X20mm Cannons instead of 6X 50 cals.

I wasn't aware there were any cannon armed Corsairs other than the C models.

The wings are off a C Hog.  I believe it had to do with wanting the markings a certain way.  I remember reading that the owners were deliberate about it anyway.

Always the tough part with current warbirds.  They don't always look the part they should :)

Makes sense Dan. I wish the engine and cowl were on I believe the paint scheme is VF-17. That was another question I had VF-17 never flew the C as far as I know.

B-24

I think that's the Privateer they are restoring.  It's an offshoot of the 24 but with the single tail, twin top turrets, waist gun blisters etc.  Its going to be a beauty.  PB4Y-2 I believe the designation is.

At work so I can't grab a book to check quick :)

My mistake :)  Looked one color on the work computer.  It's the CAF LB30/B24A.  Got more pics of it?

I wish restorers would do a better job of representing their aircraft as they would have ACTUALLY appeared during the war. Besides the fact, as noted, VF-17 never equipped 1Cs, the only 1C EVER painted tri-color was the test mule. All others used the semi-gloss sea blue. The F4U-1D that's painted to be "Ken Walsh's" bird is one of the worst offenders. For one, AFAIK Walsh's first time through was in F4U-1 birdcages, (blue-gray over light gray) and later flew F4U-4s. AND HE NEVER FLEW THE "MARINE'S DREAM" NOSE ART. That image (which the design and color of it is wrong to begin with) was on Olander's primary ride until it was wrecked in 1943. And was ALSO painted on a birdcage. :p

Additionally, tri-color aircraft were NEVER glossy. They used a non-specular paint.

It really shows a failure of attention to detail, and is really a misrepresentation of these birds.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I really couldn't get as close as I wanted or good angles on most of these but here's a few more.

PTO Spit Mk VIII

Spanish built BF-109 with Merlin engined. It's framed by a Spanish built HE111. I believe both of these aircraft were used in the movie Battle of Britain.

B-25

For you William Holden Bridges at Tokori Fans, F9 Panther.

I've never seen the 24 there -

I think I read somewhere that they are doing an engine restoration / rebuild on a b-29 to make it flyable.

I wonder if the presence of the B24 explains the missing P-51 and Hurricane. They don't seem to have spare hanger space here.
The P-40 was missing as well, but I believe it was flown to an air show in El Paso.
