Lost UDP Session switch to TCP please help
« on: November 01, 2008, 07:58:17 PM »
I have been losing my connection about every 50-60 mins for 2-3 days.  I have read allot the tips on the tech support, and done almost everything listed to clean up my system. I have also back dated my video drivers for nvidia to v61.77 as reccommended for my fx5500 256mb.  I raised my resolution up to 1024x768 and downloaded the hi-res texture pack. I lowered my max texture size from default 1024 to 512.  I've shut down my anti virus and all background programs and services, and have shut down all but the essential processes. I have 19 with AH2 running.  My game play and video seem prefect, lagging only very very rarely with the graphic's set to max detail. I have a dsl connection rj45 not usb.  I do have a rooter hub that splits my connection but i have also removed this and hooked directly to my dsl modem and still lose udp.  I'm no computer wiz but have done all i can think to do.  Any help or advise would be much appreciated. Here is my diag.                       ------------------

Question: My DSL loses sync regularly. How can I detect interference with an AM Radio? (#8511)

(Adapted from a post by Jan Janowski)

DSL uses the same frequencies as the higher end of the AM radio band, so you can often use a portable AM Radio as a detection device to track down the source.

Tune your AM radio near 1400 KHz in-beteween stations until you hear static. There must be no signal for this to work.

Now you can "Go Sniffing" for an interfering signal.

A few of the more likely causes might be:

A two wire outlet that has reverse polarity.
An incandescent light bulb
A fluorescent light assembly
Flashing lights, such as Christmas decorations
A light dimmer... even when the lights are off.
A microwave oven
A timer motor for lights or watering the lawn
A television
A motor (a fan in a bathroom, furnace, oven, or ceiling)
A transmitter (Ham or CB)
A darkness sensing outdoor light, even at a place down next door

If you believe you've found the source of interference, check your DSL and see if the problem is still there. If it is, turn the suspected device off and see if the problem goes away. If the problem is still there, keep going! You might have two sources of interference to deal with.

You will probably need to spend quite some time scanning until you find the source of your woes.

Here's how to fix the problems listed above. Re-scan after every fix.

If it is a two wire wall plug... REVERSE THE PLUG!!! On over half the interfering devices I've found, reversing the polarity of the plug resolves the RFI.

If it is an incandescent light bulb, REPLACE THE BULB.

If it is a florescent lamp assembly, first try new lamps, and then check the wires to the ballast (white is neutral, black is 'hot'). If that fails, replace the fixture.

If it is a flashing light string, obviously, REPLACE THE LIGHT STRING!

If it is a dimmer, check wiring on dimmer... If that tests okay, REPLACE THE DIMMER.

IF it is a microwave oven, TAKE THE OVEN IN FOR AN EMISSIONS TEST (if your store or repair facility doesn't understand what one is, go elsewhere!)

If it is a timer motor, REPLACE THE TIMER.

If it is a a TV with a three-prong cord, MOVE the television. You might also want to try an RFI/EMI AC Power filter box.

If it is a DC Motor, the coils are probably arcing. If it is an AC motor, it might be the AC start capacitor.

If it is a Ham or CB transmitter, use some diplomacy. Laws and theory are in the Ham's favor because of their FCC license. Approach the person and ask if he/she add a low pass filter to his/hers transmitter. That is about all the FCC will request on your behalf. RFI from transmissions will usually be within a maximum of 500 feet, so don't travel a mile looking for an RFI problem.

Should all the above fail, there are few other things you might try.

Visit Radio Shack and get a "Clip-on RFI Filter". It is a Ferrite core split in half, and you clip it on to the wire that's acting like a receiver. In 'mild' cases, tin foil around the wire will work. You'll also want to ground this wire to an AC outlet cover hold-down screw, or heat radiator. What you are trying to do is provide the interfering signal a convenient path to ground and eliminate it, without doing the same thing to the DSL signal.

Warning Will Robinson!!! This is a Black Magic Art....
What works today, may not work tomorrow....

Sometimes, a small amount of attenuation of the desired (Received) signal is "acceptable" in order to eliminate the offending signal. Since we don't have access to diagnostics, this part is definitely based on skill, experience, and luck.

For most people the sky is the limit.  For a pilot the sky is home.

google for pingplotter. Its a free program that you can use to test your internet connection. After installing type in the address for one of the arenas (addresses can be found in the stickys at the top of the tech support thread). Then post a picture of the plot. run it a good 5 minutes pinging every 5-10 seconds.

I have a 10 min image a 20 min image a 45 min image and 1 at just about an hour where is show my connection dropping out completly for several mins.  I would love to get these images from pingplotter loaded on this post so if anyone can point me in the right direction on how to do this i would be grateful.  Thanks for taking the time to read my post and offer suggestions to help fix "MY" problem when you could be doing something else.  :salute

The problem is at Road Runners' Level3 connection.  Not uncommon.  Since Road Runner and Comcast have switched much of their Internet backbone to Level3, this has been happening.

Basically, the connections appear to be quite oversold causing high levels of congestion at those gateways.  It would be at its worst during U.S. prime time hours between 8pm and 10pm.

As the election draws closer, you can expect more connection related issues to occur as there is more and more activity on the Internet.  I suspect the problem will peak about 2 to 3 days after the election.

But your overall issue is going to continue being the Level3 backbone.  We tested a server on thier backbone once and had horrible results with packet loss.  I have seen nothing that would indicate this is getting any better.

About the only reason Comcast and Road Runner wouldbe changing is to save some money.  Level3 would probably be a much cheaper alternative to their other backbone provider.

That is the text output from the DXDIAG utility.  You get it from saving the information in the DXDIAG utility.
