Close Combat - Wacht am Rhein Released
« on: November 03, 2008, 02:04:13 PM »
For those of you who don't know, Matrix Games has been bringing back the old Close Combat series, upgrading them to run on newer machines and giving each some new campaigns/maps/etc.

So far they've redone CC3 (the Russian Front) and have just released CC4 (Battle of the Bulge).

They were always very fun games with great replay value and the series death (at the time, so it seemed), really bothered me.  I'm glad a new company has seen their worth and is bringing them back.

From what I can gather, they plan on re-releasing CC5 (Invasion Normandy) and will then begin work on a brand new game.

Check it out...  www.matrixgames.com  ...  Should be right on their front page.

AWESOME!

Edit:
$40 for CC3?  Especially after they rereleased it in 2006...

awesome indeed. :) I have the whole close combat series, CC3 was my favourite by far.  I used to feel terribly sad for my units which suffered heavy casualties having survived for several battles unscathed.

£30 is a tad too steep for me- I think i'll reinstall the originals if they work on vista, which i doubt.

Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."

I have CC3 and its works on XP (a little glitchy).  I don't believe CC4 and CC5 work on XP.  But I'm sure there are communities out there with fixes for the original games.

I always like the Combat Mission series over Close Combat.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I've played the original CC5 on XP. It was the one of Ardennes right?

Well the rerelease was the Matrix games thing...  Called "Cross of Iron..."

The prices are a tad steep I suppose, but I'm willing to pay it for a few reasons:

1.  To support the company, so that they will continue this great line of games (my main reason, personally);

2.  To play against real humans, we'll both need to have the same version (and let's face it, this game is best played against a human, although the AI isn't bad - and even slightly improved in this release);

3.  Because this version has been made with modders in mind...  For example, there's a reason Civ2 still has a strong following and Civ3 really doesn't...  And that is user-created scenarios.  If you've never tried some of the user-made mods for Close Combat, you are missing out...  And since this version includes new tweaks for mod makers, there will be many new possibilities.

Anyway, those are the big three reasons I was willing to pony up the price.  YMMV :)

I still run CC5 on XP...  It works ok.  The main problem is the scroll rate for viewing battle maps is extremely quick, even on the lowest setting.  You really have to use your keyboard arrow keys to scroll...  Using the mouse makes the game borderline unplayable.
