CH stick and throttle - Rudder control question.

Hi Guys,

Is there anyone out there who currently uses a CH stick and throttle without the rudder pedals?  If so how did you setup the inputs for rudder control?

I currently use a CH stick with my old X45 throttle which has a rocker arm for rudder input.  The throttle is starting to give me grief and I'm thinking of replacing it with a CH throttle but I don't believe there is any built in control for just rudder on the CH.  I know that I could map to buttons the left and right controls for rudder input but I'm concerned that I would lose the tactile feel when I only want to input a bit of rudder ( like takeoff / landing and lining up for my inevitable missed shot ).  If anyone has the setup I'm considering I would very much like to hear your solution.

Howdy Howdy, 

Short of mapping rudder keystrokes j and l to the rudder inputs (push buttons behind the handle, maybe?) there's no provision for rudder input on the CH Throttle. You do however have dial wheels on the base, left and right side of the of the CH joystick. They're preassigned, from left to right for throttle, ailerons and pitch. You can reassign those wheels using AH joystick setup. The bottom wheel dial shows up as X axis...simply assign it to rudder and that should do the trick. If you find the need to "soften" the rudder input as you described, you can tweak the X axis scaling using the advanced option and perhaps adding some damping.

you could probably map it to the mini joystick on the throttle. I've never tried it, I have had CH pedals for a long time.

The ministick makes quite a nice rudder control.  You would want to scale it carefully but it should work well.

Homeboy...any other suggestions for the ministick? I've got peds so rudders are covered.

Hey Max.
Well, I use mine as a mouse.  If I didn't have TrackIR, I might use it for head positioning as it would work well together with a POV.  I can't think of much other use.   When I played Falcon4 and other jet games, I used it as a RADAR cursor (it's original intent).

Homeboy, I'm asking solely because I know you are the king of mod - but on both the CH Sticks I own, the centering on the ministick is so godawful that I'd never consider it as a rudder control. 

I have to set the deadband to about half of the travel on the ministick or else it won't center because it ends up in very different positions when I've moved left/Center and right/Center.

Are you referring to an unmodded stick?

I agree that the ministick is not exactly the most "precise" control on these devices    but you should be able to tame it reasonably via careful calibration and scaling (be sure to use the Control Manager) so that is not too bad.  I use it for mouse control and it works pretty well.  Rudder control is definitely less demanding than that.  So, no, I'm not talking about a mod.  I suspect you are probably not using CM right?

Actually, I am using the CH software - without it, I don't understand how folks can live with the stick - it doesn't travel the full range it's supposed to for starters. 

I just find that unless I can control rudder with utter absolute precision, I have an absolutely miserable time with nose bounce.   (To the point where I still find the CH Pedals to be problematic compared to the "old days" when I used Simpeds modded to run a pot that fed the rudder input on my MS FF).

My two cents. Sounds like you definitely need the rudders if you want precise control. I use the CH Fighterstick and ProThrottle. I use the Saitek Pro Pedals. I have the CH pedals but I like the "feel" of the Saitek better. I calibrate first trough Windows then CH Manager SW. You could use the ministick by adjusting deadband in the program and/or with CH Manager if you cannot afford the pedals now. DO NOT ADJUST the bottom or right sliders in your stick after they have been properly centered. I use the left slider for RPM control. Hope this helps.

When I upgraded to CH USB products from gameport, I was waiting on a Gameport-to-USB adapter for my pedals.

I tried the above mentioned use of mini-stick for Rudders. It worked ok, but if you have flown/played using rudder pedals for any length of time, you can forget it, it is no where close. If as you say, used a rocker switch for Rudder, then the mini-stick should work just as good if not better for you...

Murdr showed me a trick , as Homeboy mentions, using the mini-stick for moving your head around the cockpit, I have my mini-stick set up for looking over the cowl now, and it is very nice. Let go of the mini-stick and you are back at your default forward view HPS ( head Psoition setting )
