We have some responsibility
« on: December 21, 2000, 11:16:00 AM »
We as players need to take on more responsibility for making the game more interesting instead of looking for htc to come out with something new all the time to keep things interesting.  I'm thinking more organized events, especially on weeknights. Things that take people out of the general arena and into some really immersive stuff.  I would even propose that we shut down the MA during organized events to "gently guide" our brothers who are less inclined to join an organized event to get into the spirit of things.
Bottom line, it's up to us to make things more interesting.

What a coincidence. I'd been thinking about just this stuff for the past few weeks Crash.
For example,  scenarios or historical events; Well, way back when,  AW was the only thing  in town. Folks had no other choices. That changed with WB's arrival on the scene. Although not right at first. But WB's was so dramatically evolved beyond AW that it didn't matter that much if the plane set was limited. WB's took off out of the gate. Andf the scenarios had problems. but they still had them and still drew folks!  And AW  was the field where most of the WB's "take charge" people were grown.  WB's benefitted BIG time as it drew a good number of those old guard types away which gaveg WB's a fantastic first start. Over time new AWiers replaced those that left but only a couple rose to calibre of Gonzo, Fletchman anf the others who left. Most of what re-grew in AW the past 5 years has left also, for here, WB's or other genres of online gaming.  WB's also grew thier own over the past five years also and they now have the benefit of a working from a solid foundation begun 5 years agao. As well as a plane set that grew and grew. Well, till a couple of years ago anyway.
AH did draw alot of folks from AW, WB's and FA. And a number of really good folks are getting scenarios on thier feet here.  But AH did not have the benefit that WB's had in that it was the answer to so many AWiers players.
AH started off with AW, FA and WB's already up and running. People who were reluctant to leave old habits behind, as well as old squads, scnearios, Warnights/S3 events too. So AH has a steeper hill to climb to get where AW, WB's or FA is already at. And from the CM team I have no doubt that it can be done. Especially in light of the 1.05 version and from Pyro's interview when he talked about the focus of the next release being alot of new aircraft.  All I can say is for folks to put thier money where their mouths are and participate in any or all events to help them grow. And I mean participate. Help plan them , organize your side, be a group leader and promote them.
I for one am going to take some time next year to learn HTML and try to put my idle 10meg webpage capacity, on my ISP, to
use.
AH has far too little community self promotion. Maps, sounds, screen shots, movies... Far too few who make the effort or if they do they don't stick with it.   It's an almost unheard of sim on Usenet.

As for AH mods/add ons... ?? Not sure we have the ability other than sounds. AW appears to me to be crude in  comparison to the  AH program. I'm not sure we have the ability to make Vfilm or Break for AH. I don't think HiTech wants us too either.

We have a good sized community. A good communtiy. But we need more long term "do-ers" amongst the players.

(hope this wasn't too much of a ramble)

Back in the AW days, HiTech was an AW customer.  HiTech wrote a film utility for AW called Vfilm.  I don't know what break is, but I'd guess it's something that let you edit the films.  Of course after that HT and Pyro went and started WB, but previously they invested time creating things that helped the community.

I too would like to get more organised.  Sunchasr hung out in the MED for almost a month with members having limited participation, a big <S> to those who joined him. Teamwork is our responsibility, we have the tools mission builder and roger wilco it is up to us to use them. As for fair gameplay in the arena in my opinion the provider should fix some things, here are some examples.

1. Strategic bombing over 27.5K.  It is my understanding that in WW2 this was the ceiling for dropping eggs, far too many times I have seen bombers dropping from 35K or above. I wonder how difficult it would be for HTC to write in the code that when a bomber is carrying bombs it could not climb above 27.5K until after they are dropped.

2. Engine and weapon management. In WW2 what would happen if the throttle remained full during a complete flight? The engine would go BOOM.  What would happen in WW2 if a pilot held the trigger down (spray and pray)?
The planes guns would over heat and jam.

These improvements in my opinion would perhaps put the MA in a more equal playing field and curtail some of the frustrating whining (myself included). Implementing these items,I do not know how difficult htis would be for HTC.  My perception in the game has been alot of guys who love attention to detail for an accurate and immersive simulation experience instead of a quake style arena.  This again is my opinion and some probably agree or disagree with me.
