What constitutes an offensive gameID?
« on: November 11, 2008, 11:46:48 AM »
The only reason I am posting on this subject is because my 7 year old nephew like to watch me play Aces High.

I let my nephew fly Aces High offline, to avoid unleashing another squeeker, He likes to give me a "play-by-play" when attacking the off=line drones... His comment that stands out was "you sure get shot down alto uncle" makes me smile, because it is SO true!!! When He is ready I will get him a headset and control stick of his own and continue his tutelage in AH etiquette.  ;)

I REALLY don't want to explain to my Sister-In-Law how her only child learned about "KLUKLUX" and "pervert" (BOTH were ACTUAL gameIDs)due to his fascination with aviation. Those two gameIDs popped up on country channel last weekend, and I am unsure how to deal with a gameID that represents an organization that ranks up there with Stalin's KGB and Hitler's Gestapo as one of the most despised groups in history, and the another that is the kind of maniac our family tries to protect our 7 year old from.

I started to ".report" those gameIDs when they would appear on country channel/200, and squelched them when my nephew came in to watch me "fly".

I also PMd those individuals and politely asked them to change their gameIDs for the obvious reasons. I received defiant replies to the effect that it was none of my business... I am all for free expression and free speech, however I also believe that with freedom comes responsibility.

Did I persue the correct course of action? and what can be done in the future to keep me from having to explain to my Sister-In-Law why her son now knows about perverts and the KluKluxKlan, because someone thought it was "cool" to have an "outrageous" handle in a flight simulator game.

Am I "over the top"? Or am I justified in trying to prevent children from being exposed to self described perverts and racists? My nephew will learn about the bad people in the world soon enough (too soon some might say), I just hope that he doesn't learn about bad people because he loves aviation.

I have my flame retardant suit handy and have donned my extra thick skin, so let it fly!

I can vouch for "pervert"   he is a good stick and a respectable player.   You will have to ask him direct why he choose that nickname.

May have something to do with getting on peoples  6's    :noid

Take it up with HTC directly, via phone or email. Starting a thread about it accomplishes nothing- those names were not chosen inadvertently, and are intended (quite obviously) to elicit responses such as yours.

The .report function will only have any effect if enough players use it, and then it will only suspend that player's text communications for a predetermined length of time. HTC does not review the logs unless notified, so in a matter like this, just reporting won't accomplish anything. If you have a problem with a player, take it up directly with HTC.

And by the way, this is a game, run by a private company. No one has any "rights" to free speech, and the only law is HTC's.

Hmmm not sure why guys are replying to this OBVIOUS TROLL, this is the second thread of this ilk by this guy in as many weeks.

If he is sooo worried about his nephew maybe he ought to turn AH off during his visits since he finds it soo offensive.

My 7 year old is not allowed to play this game, neither is my 9 year old. Fact of the matter is there is ALOT of things that happen on a nightly basis in this game that any kid should not see nor hear.
... I am all for free expression and free speech, however I also believe that with freedom comes responsibility.
...and your the one responsible for your nephew, no different than bringing him to a rated R movie and then complaining that there was too much cursing and violence. You know how other adults will act in this game...the responsibility falls on you. This is all IMHO MaJIssue, <S>

BTW...Pervert is a great guy from my experience with him. <S> Pervert

These are the sort of questions that should be asked of HTC and not posted in the forums but I'm sure you already knew that.

You also need a thicker skin it seems.  While KuKluxKlan has no place in this game or any other, your other example 'pervert' is by no means offensive and frankly, rather petty for you to bring up and use as an example of an 'offensive' name.

Personally, I wouldn't let a child under the age of 13 play this game.

So, this thread begs the question...why was it posted?  Was it an actual attempt at a meaningful dialogue on 'offensive' names or just a troll?  My guess, a troll.

It was posted so you'd have someone else to direct your negativity at Ack-ack.  I've yet to see a post from you that's not of a condescending nature.

I guess it's one way to get your "Plutonium" rank here in the forums.

As uncontrolled as Range talk can be, I would never let anyone that age play online.  I'm all for kids playing games but you have to think about the environment you're going to bring them into.  This isn't Happy Go Fun Plane Game.  We're (in a cartoon sense) simulating battle.  I'm not sure I'd want any of my children or relative's kids into the game period, online or offline.

I came remember playing with some buddies in an old WW2 FPS game (DoD) and he let his son play online.  The following couple of days his kid would run around saying he liked shooting black people (referring to the Nazi players in dark gray uniforms).  I mean, use your head.  Online video games, especially of the war kind, are really no place for children.

The OP knows (he's been around long enough) that these sort of questions are best addressed by HTC and not posted on the forums.  So, why post it here if you know it's not allowed and will most likely be locked by Skuzzy?  Is it a real attempt at dialogue or just a post to stir the pot?

MajIssue, while I respect your viewpoint unlike some of the "Net-Heels" on here, I
also know that you having played on here yourself, you know by now that this game
can be like walking into a rowdy bar. The only recommendation that I can give you is
either try to explain to your nephew how some tards dont have the mental capacity
to be creative enough to come up with a name thats worth uttering,or only let your
nephew play in the offline mode. If you havent done it yet, the offline missions are
fairly easy to create,(just make sure you read the help manual) and I'm sure you could
create missions your nephew would be sure to enjoy.  :salute
