GAH! The community here SUCKS!
« on: December 21, 2000, 11:20:00 AM »
Hehehe, now that I've got your attention

I have one massive gripe about AH and the way the community is set up here...

Web-based message boards are the PITS. If ever there was a worst possible way to display a bulletin board the HTML based stuff wins hands down.

C'mon guys, tons of folks slaved away for years to invent this neat thing called NNTP. Y'know, the thing usenet is based on? Y'know, the thing that allows people to choose various programs to read bulletin board messages with? Y'know, the thing that gives you nifty features like a spell checker that doesn't suck?

(As an example, my broswer crashed when I brought up the spell checker. Good thing I manically copy the contents of my message when I type them... Does this strike anyone else as a HORRIBLE thing to have to do in this day and age of open standards?)

I still find myself hanging out in the AW message boards and reading through hundreds of messages a day there. Why don't I do the same thing here? Because with this crappy interface I can only read or post about 1/10th as much as I post there.

GUYS! PLEEEEEASE, hook this hunk a junk to a real NNTP server!

Just realizing I was whining right before the holidays...

TSK TSK.

I'm not saying this isn't an amazing piece of work. Not only am I impressed by this game HT, I'm impressed by how quickly things are being added! And as a engineer, I'm even more impressed by the quality of the new features. This game was obviously architechted VERY well from the get go. And it continues to amaze me every time some complex new feature gets added in (seamlessly, I might add)

In short, this game is better engineered than ANY other game I have ever seem.

And the interface is pretty amazing. And the physics (i.e. flight model) is the best I've even seen.

So *really*, what exactly is my gripe? I WANT ALL MY BUDS FROM AIR WARRIOR TO PLAY OVER HERE!

The only two reasons they give for not coming over?
#1 Is price (to that I say "cheap bastards, it's so worth it")
#2 Is community, to a man they all say they like the NNTP style message boards waaaaay more than this web-based system. Case in point, when Kesmai pulled the plug on their NNTP boards (in favor of a set-up like this one) the howl was so loud, and the posts dropped off so quickly they had to scramble to come up with a system that let folks have it both ways.

So please Santa, all I want for xmass is my two front teeth and a USNET server based message boards.

The number one thing I've wished for from HTC since day ONE, besides the P-47 "M"   , is nntp capability.

I hate UBB boards - any web boards actually. At one time because  they SUCKED when loading them up on a 56k dial up ISP connection and now lately because you can't use filters from a news reader.

Im with you lemur. I remember when another online company switched to ubb. One of the reasons given was it was easier for...how shall i put this...people of lesser intelligence to get acess to it. I say anyone that slow really wouldnt me missed. Biggest reason in my mind is ads and password protected areas for squads. I dont like ads "and havent seen any here anyway" and mailing lists are better than ubb boards anway.
I could dream a thousand more reasons to scrap ubb but thats cause i hate it

No ostie gripe? No kick about chawgs?

Hardly worth readin.... tho it does kinda remind me of the whine about the demise of DOS... who ever said progress meant things got better?

Yeah. it was AGW that started all this mess with UBB and online flight sims. Nothing good has ever come out of AGW. With news you'd have kill files, all possibilites of sorting and easy means of archiving stuff, every now and then there's a good post ( unlike this one ) on this here board.

Seems like most of not-so-computer-orientated folks shy away from news and like UBB style stuff. dunno why, maybe it's because of the pretty graphics or something? Sort of reminds me of the photoediting/scanning software you get with most scanners these days, with half screen sized buttons saying 'color photo', 'black and white photo' or 'text' and GUI distored beyong recognition from the standard windows GUI. Folks using these programs just don't know any better, how everything could be so much easier and more flexible if they used - say Photoshop.

You mean there could be ten times more whining on this board? Begone, fiend!!!

How about my office not having nttp for security reasons? That is common for many companies. The only boards I can see are web-based or through Deja-News which is a pain.

Regards.

It's pretty simple peeps.  Lotsa people have WWW access at work.  Few people have NNTP access at work.

Lemur

I know what you mean, its a little tiring to scroll through a long-to-load web list.  I use a server package called "WIN Server" (formerly Wildcat! 5 BBS software) and my message areas are accessible via telnet (ansi), web or, through an add-on, via NNTP.  I can't tell you how nice it is to scan the message areas with my Forte' Free Agent Newsreader rather than waiting for a "pretty" web interface to load each n every icon, graphic, etc.

Check my system out...this isnt an ad, just an offer to see how a community-based system works.  My site is www.checksix.net  .  Sign up as a new user and look around...then, fire up your news reader and look around via that!  Obviously you'll need to setup your news reader to go into a new server that requires authentication...but once in, its pretty easy.

Take care!

Paul
