USS Freedom

Hey,
 The USS Freedom was here docked in Port Huron Michigan yesterday. It's like a stealth, uber, missle friggett boat. I will try to put a picture up (at work right now).  Very cool!

Yeah, well we have the Independence, the Freedom's sister ship, docked here where everyone can see it.
Both are very good looking ships. The new LCS class of ship should do very well in the near future.

Sort of. I'd actually call them small Frigates. Its hard to see on radar as well. But the best part about this ship concept is that their capabilities can be changed very quickly. In other words the weapons and mission critical packages can be mixed and matched like a kids toy. You can have one equipped for mine laying and inshore fighting. Want to change it around to find submarines? Then just change the weapons modules on it. Or do the same to support special Ops. Or for more anti-air, or more protection for CVs since the ship will have advanced SeaRam missiles. Or you can change it around to support both manned and unmanned helicopters. Its even going to have modules for supporting infantry and marines with land attack missiles.

Pretty slick concept when you think about it. And it will be networked with other USN ships and assets in the strike package while providing the USN with an inshore capability were a little weak on currently. The one Lockheed Martin is building is the smaller one thats even faster, "Freedom". Ive heard rumors it can go well over 50 knots.

must be some small ship to navigate from Atlantic  through  St.Lawrence and narrow Welland Canal all the way to Port Huron.

It seemed to be good sized, not near the mass of an ore freighter (1/3) the size, but still way cool!

It was in Milwaukee on 2 November before it was commissioned the following weekend.
