Call of Duty - World At War
« on: November 14, 2008, 05:42:09 AM »
Just installed and started up first mission. The introduction, while not as extensive and impressive as the CoD4 intro, is fast-paced and very classy with authentic footage mixed in. Amazing stuff, top notch graphics as would be expected from Treyarch and Activision. Running the game in 2560x1600 resolution, 4x AA on a dual-SLI GTX280 setup it looks fantastic! Gameplay is very much the same as CoD4. So if you like that game this title is just as good or better, for the WW2 enthusiast at least.

If you enjoy something different from the shooting range every once in a while, this game is for you. The storytelling aspect of it is very well made and becomes almost cinematic from time to time. Historically accurate? Well I don't know, generally speaking yes. We know how historically accurate Hollywood productions are though and in comparison this game shines. As for realism, it's a game, as a game it's better than most but I'd say it's still very mainstream FPS. I for one am very curious to see where the story will take me, later on there will be a European campaign fighting the germans but right now it's Makin island Aug 17th 1942!

Multiplayer has a new 4-player co-op mode.

I beta tested the multiplayer on the 360. Game should be called COD4 - WAW. Same stuff really, except you can revive ur budy in "last stand", rather than shoot him dead. 7 kills you got to release the hounds rather than sending the flapper. One bite and you are dead, but you can sit in a corner and nail them as they show up ... if you find a corner. Fear factor of those dogs is pretty high as you ear them bark louder and louder wondering from which direction they are going to show up.

Overwise u still have the same attachments more or less. Silencer, aperture, baillonette, grenade launcher, tripod, sniper scope. You can man tanks, so u have tank specific perks like faster reload, faster turret rotation, faster speed.

That's about it really  :uhoh
Dat jugs bro.

Uh, came to the soviet campaign now which begin in Stalingrad. Apart from the very clean and proper uniforms, there are tons of historical and factual errors, in addition to the very thick propagandistic monologue by Sgt Reznov in the beginning. So, where did the gruesome hardships and truths of war go? This is laid out as a holy war, all german soldiers are evil, kill enough of them and you will become a saint. What are they doing, flirting with the russian market?

Seriously though I find it a little hard to enjoy the campaign when german field officers carry nazi armbands, volksgrenadier troops and Königstiger tanks are in Stalingrad etc etc... I think this game is no better, or worse, than a hollywood production now. Gameplay wise if you can look beyond all this it remains a very well made story.

The jump from Stalingrad in '42 to the Seelöw heights in '45 is also a little hard to stomach. This is like a 1000 page document sized down to 10. I think they've cut a lot of shortcuts in the creation of this game. Perhaps the thing with this title is MP though, and I've not looked into that much. In the one MP game I've played so far however, russians spawned with Thompsons and germans with SVTs.  Must be full of bugs, still.

The Thompson is so screwed up to be unbelievable that it got past beta testers and quality control.  The barrel/compensator is from a 1928, the receiver/stock is from an M1A1.  Then they allow a 50rnd drum on it..  Pick one, either a 1928 or M1A1, and why not both.  The game is suffering from lack of weapons.  The sound is from a belt fired 30cal.  :huh :lol  Does not sound anything like a real Thompson.

The Mp40 is likewise suffering from sound issues.  It shoots alot smoother in real life as well.

The Springfield 03 has graphix issues as well.  The sight picture is all wrong.

They have the M1A1 Carbine in game, but the actual 3D graphix is the M1 Carbine.

The M1 Garand can be reloaded, :rofl when you only have fired a couple rounds.  The sight picture is weird on it as well.

There are sights which can be added to guns which had no historical basis.  Same with silencers etc.  All in all a totally non historic representation, quite different from their earlier efforts.

Love the ablative armor on the T-34.. yeah...  All this from an hour of game play too... slacker developers/alpha/beta testers.

Yeah, I am so far impressed with the further refined graphics, but let down by the lack of historical accuracy and presentation of the war, not to mention the people who fought it.

You're kidding right?  You actually expected something realistic from the Call of Duty Franchise?  Get real...  I've played 1 and 2 and a friend convinced me to buy 4.  4 was an adventure in having ADHD.  Though I will say that MP on PC servers (larger servers) is completely different than the smaller servers I saw on the 360.
