B-25B [Doolittle Raider]
« on: November 15, 2008, 05:28:11 AM »
I'm hoping to get the B-25B that's configured to launch from a CV.

From:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doolittle_Raid
On 1 April, the 16 modified bombers, their five-man crews and Army maintenance personnel, totalling 71 officers and 130 enlisted men,[15] were loaded onto USS Hornet at Alameda. Each aircraft carried four specially-constructed 500-pound (225 kg) bombs. Three of these were high-explosive munitions, and one was a bundle of incendiaries. The incendiaries were long tubes, wrapped together in order to be carried in the bomb bay, but designed to separate and scatter over a wide area after release. Five of these bombs had Japanese "friendship" medals wired to them - medals awarded by the Japanese government to U.S. servicemen before the war. [16] To decrease weight (and thus increase range), the bombers' armament was reduced. Each bomber launched with two .50-calibre (12.7 mm) machine guns in an upper turret and a .30-caliber (7.6 mm) machine gun in the nose. Two wooden, simulated gun barrels mounted in the tail cones were intended to discourage Japanese air attacks from that direction, and were cited afterward by Doolittle as being particularly effective.[9] The aircraft were clustered closely and tied down on the Hornet's flight deck in the order of their expected launch.

I'd like it as it would work very well in taking a town down especially for cruiser-less task groups.

I agree as long as it can only launch 170 miles before you intended to.
Then after you drop you have to ditch in enemy territory and not be heard from for months.

heh long time we didn't hear this one.

The loadout is the same than a TBM, and a TBM is faster  :noid

Whilst I recall hearing that HTC has said that they won't do this, I would nevertheless like to see it.

However, it would/should probably be perked, and even then it might be very difficult to take off from the CV (and don't forget that you probably wouldn't have any drones either).

I can get off the CV in fully loaded lancs, 24s, and 17s...I think someone can get off in a B25 ;)

The Doolittle raid happened because in early 1942 that was the only way we could get bombers in range Japan.
The raid was a one time deal more for moral purposes and shock value than anything else.
B-25s are never out of range of enemy bases in AH, there's no need to put them on CVs in the sim.
There's other carrier aircraft that would make a better addition to the sim than a CV capable B-25 like the B6N, D4Y, Sea Hurri, SB2C, Barracuda, or Firefly.

I would rather see a B25J with formations than the B25B.

I think if we needed the B25B model for a scenario...  couldnt HCT allow us to launch from a CV.  IIRC, they've done with it with other planes.

So... there is no benefit to adding the B25B to the game for MA use, imo.

Sure, a TBM is faster (by 1MPH?) and has the same load-out, but if that was the logic, then why do we have a hurri1 and spit1? It doesn't have to be always about better and faster planes, but if the Doolittle raid was a significant turning point in the war, it should nevertheless be honored and remembered by integrating the B-25B ingame.

Wouldn't it be awesome to commemorate the anniversary next year, April 12 with this mod? Imagine upping a B-25B mission, NOE to an enemy base. Just like how the Doolittle outfit did it!

And just to clear things up, I am not putting this wish thingy to the exclusion of your choice aircraft. The way I see it, the more choices we have in the game, the less boring it becomes. More maps, more planes, more GV's. AHII is a WWII immersion game, and completing the registry of weapons(at least major ones) would be awesome. The V1, V-2 rockets are also part of history, but judging by the aversion to new weapons this community has, I doubt it will be integrated.

And for what it's worth, those brooms in the rear would more than likely be enough to deter Shifty from getting on my six.

I disagree; certain very vocal individuals in the 'community' have such an aversion, however there is a far larger not-so-vocal group of people who would welcome the option of adding many new features and planes to the game.

The Doolittle Raid on Japan was a one time deal and was planned as a sneak attack but they were compromised before they reach their intended launch point because of Japanese picket ships. They still launched and had a successful mission in releasing their bombs over Japan but they still didn't have enough fuel to make it far enough into inland China where they could meet up with friendly forces in the area. Although some did make it to friendly forces not all of them did. I doubt HTC will add this version of the B-25 because it was not used multiple times during the war.

So, the only difference beside the B25B and the B25C is the armament...?
I think that we'll be fine continuing to run the Doolittle raids with B25C's.
