46" plasma/lcd with AH2?!?!
« on: November 15, 2008, 11:05:30 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has successfully hooked up a plasma/lcd up to this game?

Drop any frames, how does it look compared to monitor (what was your monitor?)

I'm picking up a 1080p either plasma or lcd (most likely plasma, I can't tolerate the blur of lcd honestly)

Umm the plasma will look more blurry than the LCD.

Can you explain this?

lcd = 60hz or for much more $$, 120hz
plasma = 480hz

am I missing something?

Plasma will have 'blurries' and 'ghosting' so bad it will make shooting accurately very very hard.

Look on Newegg at the 30" LCD HD monitors. You get much better resolution and none of the problems of plasma.

Look for less then 6ms refresh and 2560x1600 resolution.

I have been playing on 50"+ screens for over five years and I don't have to wait till my wife is gone  :D  as she has the old 50" in the living room.  I use my 60" SXRD as my primary PC monitor <--using it to type this reply from my LazyBoy recliner 8' away.  I get no blurring @ 1920x1080p, 120HZ, and rated 2ms response time. AH looks awesome on it.  Jazz1, my squaddie lives nearby and his 50" plasma also looks great with AH ; although he does have to be a bit careful of burn-in issues.

I think you guys must be referring to a very old plasma model or something.  I've seen the playstation 3 on several new'ish' plasmas (1080ps) that had refresh times = lcd and they look MUCH better than the LCD's.

What models are you takling about?  480 vs 60..480 is better. (this is what causes blur)  refresh times less than many lcd's.  (another blur causer).

I'm just wondering where you have this information from? Personal experience /testing or friend etc etc?  Let me know because I don't want to get something that I can't use for PC use just in case I want to!

Thanks.

I have to agree with you on the video quality of a plasma.  I have actually played AH on Jazz1's 50" plasma and blurring wasn't an issue.  It looks great and his isn't a newer model.  It is bout 3 years old @ 13??x768 rez and 60Hz.  I am not quite sure where you are getting the 480HZ from as I am only aware of 60HZ or 120HZ consumer displays.

Plasma does have some disadvantages as a PC display.  Technology is getting better but Burn-in or Image Retention is still a concern. They are heavy, create a lot of heat, and use more electricity than most other displays.

I know from experience because I flew on plasma for over a year. Ghosting will occur if you stay in the tower and go afk and then take a plane up. Near sunrise/sunset you will see the retained image of the tower.

Blurries will occur at 12ms and higher. If you are flying behind a plane that doesnt move much relative to your position and then after several minutes he moves off there will be blurries. The same goes for the lazy 'jink' that cons do as they pull away from you and roll/yaw/pitch just a tad to irritate your gunnery. Warping drones are particularly irritating.

There are things you can do to avoid this. You can 'burn in' your plasma by watching a tv channel that does not have logos but does have constantly changing video for a period of 24 hours and you must also avoid EVER leaving your screen on when you go AFK for extended periods and use trackir and dont stare at your wingmans butt while you fly to your target. If you get image burn just leave your screen watching video and it will probably clear itself after a few hours (days if you didnt do the burnin period).

Thats my experience and if you have experienced something different then very good. I moved back to lcd.

WOW!  Sounds like your plasma wouldn't even be a good television.  I am surprised that you played on it for over a year if it was so bad.

I am glad my LCOS based display has none of those issues.  It makes a great PC display and I rarely use the one on my desk.  Cnet rated it's picture quality second only to the Pioneer Kuro.  Sony's own LCD at double the price for 8" less came in third.  It is too bad Sony stopped making them for marketing reasons.  I would probably choose LCD over Plasma as a PC display if I were forced to replace it today.

Well I dunno now lol.
I looked at a plasma in the stores and didn't see any blur, burned in images when switching programming (usually where you see it), and they were as bright as the LCD with MUCH more contrast.

Not sure who asked about the 60 / 120 thing vs 480 but plasma's are 480hz, while lcd's are for the most part 60hzs (standard lcd computer monitor).  I couldn't put my finger on it, because my frames are 60 frames per sec while gaming in most games,...but something seemed...off vs my sony 20" crt.   It DOES make a difference for sports and gaming to have a plasma or a 120hz lcd.  Ive seen hockey on the xbox on a 42" LG 720 p and it looked pretty darn nice to me.

But when you see blu ray action movies on a 50" plasma 1080p - the difference is VERY clear!

Alas, I have to be logical about this too.  Costco has a 46" Sharp lcd 1080p for $1k now!  That's a pretty good price.

I'm going to wait till after the black friday sales to see what they come up with.   So far the sales have been blah as of yet.  These retailers have to wakeup and start truly cutting the costs....or should I say, the manufacturers better give them the ability to do this (as the avg tv is only marked up about 25%)

btw chalenge, you aren't going to find any 12ms tvs out there anymore I dont think.

480 Hz refers to the subfield rendering approach on plasmas. 8 fields at 60 Hz = 480 Hz.

Approach refresh like that and tell me again why you like plasma so much. Plasma is getting better and may eventually have an advantage but I dont see it. I believe there is another technology coming called LDE (Laser Display Engine) and until thats here I wont explore plasma again.

Hmmmm, not techy enough on tv's to know enough to dispute your claims but based on what I've heard you are over simplifying this.
Now you opened a can of worms that I'll have to explore?  I don't know if I should thank you or be mad at you lol!??!

The laser tv you are talking about is already out by mitsubishi (sp?)

Well im waiting for OLED. they go for alot though (11inch is a couple of grand) some models they are trying out is 11-inch (28 cm, resolution 1,024×600) and 27-inch (68.5 cm, full HD resolution at 1920×1080) models claiming million-to-one contrast ratio and total thickness (including bezels) of 5 mm. They say the response time can be .01ms and they wont be any burn in cause there is no backlight and they should be way cheaper once they figure out a production line since they arnt really "made" they are printed like a piece of paper. Only thing is the life is about 1/2 the time of a lcd/plasma usually is but they have figured out a way to make it last just as long or longer than lcd/plasma but there could be issues with the way they do that. And blacks will be true blacks cause it actually turns off in those sections and colors will be very close to true life. But again price is the issue right now and there only selling them in japan atm. Oh and im talking about the active matrix ones not the passive( used in cell phones or anything with a really small screen is passive)
