I'm curious as to why, when an aircraft is out of the current icon range (9,000 yards), we have black dots, rather than the colored dots in brand W. It always helped in identifying, or at least narrowing down, what type of adversary you were about to face. If I saw a silver speck, with a little glint of red, I knew it was a P-51D. Green, with a hint of red would probably be one of the KI's. Navy blue with a touch of yellow was an F4U. Blue-gray and purple meant a Dora. Obviously, this helped in categorizing which far off cons could become a threat. Can the human eye pick out some tells in the paint scheme of a WWII plane at 5.1 miles? I don't really know, most of the stuff I have to look at is much closer 8^).
