Base under attack
« on: May 05, 2000, 06:13:00 AM »
Low level planes and vehicles are not shown on map, so, the map shows only enemy presence in the sector. But once a pack of tanks start to disintegrate a friendly base, we have no warning of this attack, we must go to that sector and look what is going with the base. If an enemy bomber attack a base and destroy its radar, we have no more information about that attack except the enemy presence in the sector.
We should have some kind of warning about those attacks, for example, with the base icon drawn in a brighter or darker green. If any bomb or proyectile hits the base, its icon changes the color for 30 seconds (for example).
Another and simpler idea is to generate a "contry message" about this attack: "A1 is being attacked" and wait for 30 secs prior to  repeating that message if the base gets any new hits. Same for city, HQ and factories.

In a RL situation, any attack against friendly structures should be transmitted inmediatelly via radio.

I like it this way. If you give too much warning, there would be no way to tank effectively. I think it is a good idea to search the off bases occasionally, to check their status.

I think no one is going to check the status to every base with enemy presence in the sector and no cons shown on radar. In fact, most of the times you'll have the map zoomed and will loose what happens in those bases. And how to verify whether your city, HQ or factories are being attacked? Just flying there to found an alone 109 at 30k?

Going to attack a base in tank is a good idea, ok, but with air cover, like in RL. Stealth attacks against bases have nothing to do with reality.
I agree with you, the "no alarm" status helps  the tanks to acomplish the mission, but this is gaming with a hole in the game, and is not helping to have real armoured battles with air cover.

maybe I'm just strange (I'll admit to being weird   ), but if I see a marker in a sector for a while and no pinpoint dot (and HQ is fully functional) I'll jump to that base and see what's up.  I've caught a few tanks like this

Easy. Whenever I land (or die) I will look at the map. I look especially closely at those bases near enemy vehicle bases. I type .move # and go do a visual. I type "esc" and then look at the status of the field. You would be surprised at how quickly you can cover the important, most likely threatened fields in this manner.

There is another way to hinder the attacks, too. Jabo their vehicle bases (ridiculously easy to do) and there will be no attack. Better still, capture the V-base and you know there will be nothing coming. You can eventually put enough distance between the nearest enemy V-base and your bases that most guys won't take the time to drive.

It's what I do. I seldom tank, but I wouldn't want to make it harder at this point to do it. It has added so much to the game that it would be too bad if we took one of the few successful methodologies away from the tankers. What's more, I'm sure there is more of an historical precedent for enemy tanks overrunning a field than gooneys dropping 10 troops and capturing.

No slam, just a different opinion.

Assuming the radio wasn't damaged, or the radio man wasn't killed, or the radio man could get to his radio in time!
