ocean depth
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:20:30 PM »
A previous thread about CV groups pulling right up to shore got me thinking.  If this were the real world these ships probably wouldn't be able to get that close to most shore lines.  Could there be a way for terrain builders to specify depth to the water?  Specify the minimum safe depth for the fleet to operate in and then show, on the CV commanders map only (maybe), the depth of the water.  They would be able to chart a course anywhere in the water but if they aren't careful the fleet or, just a ship or two, would run aground and become disabled.

Maybe this is too complicated but, it seems better for realism and to eliminate people using the fleets as pseud-landing craft.

:aok It would be nice if the planes would sink after ditching in the water and not just sitting on the top of it.

In reality planes float pretty well if there is alot of air in the fuel tanks.   Having said that two days is extreme!

Not unheard of for them to float for up to an hour.  They should sink at some point.

IIRC a plane that ditches will eventually disappear/sink and you are killed.

Longer than that  but not two days!  I fly the Pilatus, obviously not a WWII fighter but it one did stay afloat until a rescue ship came a couple of days later.

Again depends on many factors, did the a/c break apart during the ditch.  Were there holes all over from battle.  Were the tanks flooded with fuel already?   ETC.  Some planes sunk right away some did not.

But don't forget the engine hold a lot of the plane weight.

Getting back on topic, this idea of CVs running aground is a great idea!  Count me in!

For example some places near shores have reefs and sandbars that go out quite some distance.

Wouldnt it be great if the CV commander went to close and all of the sudden the CV stops?

Now the fighters cant up as well because there is no 30 knot headwind from the speed of the carrier.  At the same time the carrier is now vulnerable to bombers big time!
