Well only if too close to the shore.  Like the thread was saying.  The thread is saying that it was unlikely CV groups would get as close to the shore as they do in the game.  I agree.  They more than likely were some distance out there.  I find it funny you can take out a carrier with a Tiger in this game.

So if this must stay like many other wierd and rediculous situations in this game, I say beach the damn thing then.  Or let there be the possibility of it, that way the CV Commander has to be careful when planning the route of the CV.

The problem is balance between air strikes and artillery bombardment. The heavy guns should be up close due to lack of line-of-sight and the carrier should be far away to cover it from attack and allow fighters to climb. The issue is that fleets are literally a moving airfield to the game that cannot be split apart. Doing so is too complicated even if they could be. Who controls the ships? How? How to stop griefers?

IIRC cv groups need to be more than 4 miles off of the coast for it to be not considered "touching land".

...Could there be a way for terrain builders to specify depth to the water?  Specify the minimum safe depth for the fleet to operate in and then show, on the CV commanders map only (maybe), the depth of the water...
We would require actual water tiles before that happens.

Kind of what i was thinking.  I realize this may be a tall order but, if doable, it would take away one of the cheesiest aspects of CV usage.

Oh boy...just what I want to do...model the ocean floor along with the terrain.  :O

I can do it, but what a pain that would be.  :)

I don't know that it would require more than one new tile type.  You have regular water as we do now and then a second tile type that is modeled shallower and you could choose to place these between the land and sea tiles.

NO!  NO TO THE FISHY AND WHALES.  Then we'd have PETA and all that crap!  LOL

I dont know what goes into it.  All Im saying is near the shore.  Maybe the increase in what would be considered touching land is all that is in order here.

Say no closer than 10 miles?  Or am I out to lunch here?

Maybe 5 to 10 miles at the max?

Well, unless you're making a terrain for a scenario, underwater details are not necessary. Just build a grayscale with a slope off the edge of land and that will do. ;)
