Processes record?
« on: November 21, 2008, 03:31:45 PM »
Stayed at the in-law's a couple days ago and had to transfer some files off their old desktop to their new Dell Inspiron 1525 (2ghz C2D and 2gb ram).  Of course it was a Vista system but I thought it was running particularly slow.  Checked the task manager and found 84 processes running.   :rofl

What's your record (non-virus/spyware system)?

Whoa, that's a lot of processes running. Was the machine idle or was tasked with something? Is it a brand new system fresh from Dell? BTW I will never buy another Dell.

My game rig has 18 processes running when I'm playing AH.

My other comp has 34 at idle.

IE was open along with itunes, there was a lot of pre-installed useless crap on it.  I can't remember everything that was in the task manager.  The computer was 3-4 months old maybe?  All these startup programs they load on computers are just as bad as spyware as in terms of performance loss.

Has anyone developed a theory based on the number of cores on a processor is directly related with the amount of preinstalled startup software on off the shelf machines?

102?  Holy watermelon Roy!

I installed iTunes on my old PC and deleted it within 10 minutes.   I noticed that coupled with Quicktime, it brought a then fast PC in 2006, to a halt.  I tried WMP 11 on this current machine and reverted back to 9, less crap to bog this one down with.   Too many "network" services attached.

78 I believe on a fresh Vista computer. Helped them shave it down some but since it was Vista I could only do so much.  :cry

Also, always been a WMP 10 person myself, 9 was good to and 11 just blows.

For whatever reason, I cannot upgrade to 10.   I'll keep trying but it keeps coming back with an installation error.

I had a screen shot of my dad's with over 100, I can't find it right now and I can't remember the exact number... I want to say 115, but it wasn't a round number like that.

that was on an XP machine.

3 older printers with software running looking for them, 5 different anti-spyware / anti-virus programs, it had java, itunes, shockwave, and some other stuff all looking for updates automatically. it was a mess
