So is the price the only backside of SSDs? Tempted to buy one, the capacity is going up on SSDs and they look like a good option (though admittedly pricey) for a high-speed system.

The technology is spotty in my opinion. I had to return the first drives I bought and switch brands from Patriot to G.Skill. The Patriots worked great but after a little time slowed down to a snails pace (they claim a Vista problem) but the G.Skill drives dont seem to have that problem. I started off with a RAID setup for capacity and ended up with a drive for the OS a drive for FSX (nearly 70 GB by itself) a RAID for 'other programs and data' and standard hard drives for backups. Boot times are faster but not instantaneous and most other programs start and run better. I would have to say the benefits of SSDs are more hype then reality but the technology is still emerging and improving.

If you check with the benchmarking sites your better off with a western digital v raptor over the current SSD's out there.  The cost per GB is almost 3 (lest expensive) times that or a raptor and near (notice I said near) the same performance.  Maybe in 12 or 18 months it will be worth the investment.  A high end high performance SSD is about 7 to 12 dollars per GB.  Boutique systems started using these at first and have gone back to V Raptors.
