VMF-251 has issued the following decorations for the action of 11/21:
Air Medal
Air Medals have been issued to the following:
Saxman - Sinking an enemy destroyer during a torpedo attack
aJoust - Sinking an enemy destroyer during a torpedo attack
Drazz - Sinking an enemy cruiser during a torpedo attack
HAMMERR - Remaining in the engagement even though the rest of his squadron had retired for the evening or been shot down, making a second attack against the
Kaga and making a near-miss on the carrier.
Navy Unit Commendation
All participants in the frame received the Navy Unit Commendation. VMF-251 sunk three enemy warships, executed a highly-coordinated torpedo attack with precision, and shot down eight enemy aircraft. All ten TBMs survived the initial attack on the
Kaga, and all of the squadron's five losses came after returning to Midway for rearm, most of which came after taking off again.
Additionally, VMF-251 issued the following decorations for the action of 11/14
Bronze Star
The frame of 11/14 marked the 25th sorties flown by Drazz and Herder. As such, both have received the Bronze Star in recognition of this accomplishment.
