snaphook
« on: November 28, 2008, 01:08:03 AM »
bit of a funny thing the other night. cruising along, around 18k or so in MW(it was that map with land at 10k+, and bases in the valleys). anyway, i see this sbd a bit lower than me. i think"easy kill", and drop on it. last second, he banks hard to avoid me. i go up, stay fast, and repeat......banks hard outta my guns agian. now, i figure.....ok....i should be able to turn iwth this thing, so i pull a bit harder, and a few seconds later, that things puttin rounds in me, and gives me a PW.
i headed out to rtb, managed to land it, and found out it was snaphook flyin it. well.......he spent the next 20 minutes or so talking with me on open channel, discussing what i should've done compared to what i did do, and not once sounding derogotory. in fact, he pretty much made it a point to tell me where the good points in my flying were during that fight(although i felt i flew that fight like poo poo). i was in a p38G, BTW. hard to see through that bulletproof front plate, but turns pretty nice.

it was a fun fight, and i enjoyed it, although i had to stick my tail between my legs and run away. the best thing was that it was against someone like that, that will take the time to help those of us willing to listen.
i've been running into quite a few of them in MW lately, and believe me, it is very much appreciated.

someone(bosco i think) started a thread asking who in AH we were thankful for.

well, i have my answer. all of those guys, that take the time to teach us how to fight better. the guys that will fight you in anything, and then dissect the fight, in enough detail, that it is very very easy to understand what they're talking about. and they never treat ya like dirt, or berate ya about anything(something i see a lot of on open channel.)
THEY'RE the ones that are the most fun to fight, win or lose. ya learn somehting from em each and every time. you guys know who yas are.......and i reallylook foward to fighting people like you guys more often. maybe someday soon, i'll manage to remove some things from your airplanes too.  :D

Shuffler........sorry 'bout that pick tonight dude.......i just kinda couldn't help myself when i saw a p38 commin straight up.  :D  somehow, i know i'll pay for it next time though.  :rofl

Well part of the problem is you were in a P38G.  Now that's just asking for trouble...er... wait!  :)

I agree 100%.  Those folks who contribute real knowledge, especially without the ego crap really deserve all of the kudos they can possible get.

I'll be the first to admit that I find some of these guys a bit intimidating even though I know that I shouldn't.  I seriously want to learn from them as much as is humanly possible, but I respect them so much that I am nervous when faced with the thought of revealing how bad I really am.

Quite the conundrum sometimes.

I'd say that just about everyone who has a "sound" understanding of ACM got there because someone else took the time to explain and nurture a genuine interest. I owe most of my initial schooling to two guys from AW "FR"...-HR- and Rocketman, some significant polish was added by Big-T. Once I got here in 99 I started over, and then when I became a formal trainer I again realised I was just scratching the surface. Back then a lot of guys hung out in the TA (It had live ammo) and used it as an informal dueling arena. some of these guys were Nash, Citibria (Fester), DMF (leviathan), +jase (doesnt play) and others...all of whom graciously played "whack the trainer" with me to keep me improving. While we have a great cadre of formal trainers and resources I think most of us "old school" guys will try and pay it forward if we can. We have a selfish motive, we want to raise the overall quality of our opposition to increase our own enjoyment. I'm glad I was able to help in some small way :salute

I'd agree with this - the trainers are the most helpful people I've had the pleasure of coming across - plus the good sticks ingame who are more than happy to tell me where I went wrong.

Came across Cmustard last night (I know a few people have had run ins with him) but he was a: more than happy to school me in a ki84 v a p51 (having removed e to ensure it was a fair straight fight) and b: after he schooled me, to encourage me to keep practising and keep trying.

The same also goes for Silat, and virtually every other known stick in this addictive, frustrating, annoying, wonderful game

<S>

Wurzel (Still sucks, but providing less free kills generally  :D)
I'm the worst pilot ingame ya know!!!

It's all unrealistic crap requested by people who want pie in the sky actions performed without an understanding of how things work and who can't grasp reality.

Snaphook has aways been a class player (even in a previous incarnation as an AK ;)) ... flying with him or against him always makes for an enjoyable sortie ... win, lose, or draw.

I would have to agree and say thanks to many people who have always offered a helping hand when I've not been bullheaded and asked for it.  Just the other night, AKAK owned me in his 38.  I asked him how he did it and he explained it very well.  He also said that he would post a video on the Training Forums, but hasn't, *aahhemmm*.  But regardless, he and others have helped me out in the last year or so, now I just need to go get a lot more help from some Trainers.

yes, it was.....it was a fun, if not frustrating fight. like i said, i made the mistake of underestimating that aircraft. i still haven't watched the film, but like i said, he moved that thing around like i would've never thought it could.

on a different note, was turning with some il's, a random spit, some 109's, and random f4f n f6f's. couldn't figure out why my PJ felt so heavy. on one point when i was run....eerr.......extending  :D i glanced inside to see how much fuel i had. was still feeding off the DT's.  :rofl
didn't land much, but managed to put a little of snaps advice to work, and actually scored a couple kills though. still need LOTS more polishing in the 38 though.

again, thanks to ALL of you gus that are willing to help/advise us.....trainers, and non-trainers. your guys time is very much appreciated.

I think the plane handling was excellent. You should be able to see everything we discussed on 200 afterward. All thats needed is a bit of illumination on the cause and effect of angles fighting and the contrasts with E fighting :aok

yaknow....i don't now who that was....i don;t even think he thanked me for savin his hide.  :D

ya, although i barely get time to get ingame, MW has been getting better all the time with you guys comming in here. always good fights, good advice, and best of all, you guys try to help us conserve our cartoon fuel, by lightening our carton airplanes for us.  :rofl :rofl

i had a couple squadmates calling for help defending from the bish..that;s why i dissappeared from where we were fighting when i first logged in.
i actually had a 3 kill run going, and was thinking to myself....."maybe i should go land, since i haven't landed any multi-kill runs tonight." then i saw a low 109. dropped, and found his buddies too, so i bravely ran away after a couple turns. i didn;t land those kills either.  :rofl  greed kills.  :D

ok....watched the film at home last night. i see what you meant about when i was keeping my passes fast, although seeing it from your side, it looks like maybe i was giving you too much room? i think where i finally made the fatal mistake, was when we were going down(like you told me that night), but it looked like i was holding my own, right up 'till that departure stall? at about 2:30. had i doen that delibretly, it would've been a great way to get you out front, but alas, by the time i recovered, you had guns pointed to me. i can't recall my flap setting there, but i think we were too fast for me to have full flaps deployed though, which might've helped me.

if anyone else wants to chime in with any further advice(besides "beware the sbd) too, it is welcome advice.
