bit of a funny thing the other night. cruising along, around 18k or so in MW(it was that map with land at 10k+, and bases in the valleys). anyway, i see this sbd a bit lower than me. i think"easy kill", and drop on it. last second, he banks hard to avoid me. i go up, stay fast, and repeat......banks hard outta my guns agian. now, i figure.....ok....i should be able to turn iwth this thing, so i pull a bit harder, and a few seconds later, that things puttin rounds in me, and gives me a PW.
i headed out to rtb, managed to land it, and found out it was snaphook flyin it. well.......he spent the next 20 minutes or so talking with me on open channel, discussing what i should've done compared to what i did do, and not once sounding derogotory. in fact, he pretty much made it a point to tell me where the good points in my flying were during that fight(although i felt i flew that fight like poo poo). i was in a p38G, BTW. hard to see through that bulletproof front plate, but turns pretty nice.

it was a fun fight, and i enjoyed it, although i had to stick my tail between my legs and run away. the best thing was that it was against someone like that, that will take the time to help those of us willing to listen.
i've been running into quite a few of them in MW lately, and believe me, it is very much appreciated.

someone(bosco i think) started a thread asking who in AH we were thankful for.

well, i have my answer. all of those guys, that take the time to teach us how to fight better. the guys that will fight you in anything, and then dissect the fight, in enough detail, that it is very very easy to understand what they're talking about. and they never treat ya like dirt, or berate ya about anything(something i see a lot of on open channel.)
THEY'RE the ones that are the most fun to fight, win or lose. ya learn somehting from em each and every time. you guys know who yas are.......and i reallylook foward to fighting people like you guys more often. maybe someday soon, i'll manage to remove some things from your airplanes too.  :D

Shuffler........sorry 'bout that pick tonight dude.......i just kinda couldn't help myself when i saw a p38 commin straight up.  :D  somehow, i know i'll pay for it next time though.  :rofl

<<S<>> and thanks guys!!

:salute nice positive topic :salute

SBDs are amazing turners

YES, THEY ARE.
one other thing i forgot to note.......

most pilots in that position, regardless of aircraft, or firepower, would've turned right into me, and went for a quick ho. snap never even thought about that apparently.
it was a really really fun fight.

Well part of the problem is you were in a P38G.  Now that's just asking for trouble...er... wait!  :)

i'm sitll amazed at how the G turns compared to the J. wish it had WEP though, as the other night, i kept gettin the guys that knew better than to turn with one. if only they had known it was me in there.  :noid

thanks. like i said, though, seeing it from his end, i think i gave him too much room when i was climbing away in my passes. wondering if i should've been turning a bit earlier, and harder, at the risk of losing the E that i had, but also taking away his time to set up for my next pass.
did you notice the departure stall at about 2:30? i think THAT is what ended that fight for me. had snap been in anthign with real guns, i'd have been dead. on the other hand, had it only been an average pile-it, that fight may have continued past there.

the ensueing conversation is a good reason to keep 200 tuned too, as i think anyone reading it may have picked up some gooood info.

i haven't come across taz in a d3a yet, but when i was still in the guns, i came upon storchie(i think) in one.
was pissin me off big time....i could NOT hit that darnd airplane. i ran outa ammo on him, and not a single round in it.  :rofl

3DA is on a completely different level as a pure turner. An SBD has no chance vs a 3DA in a pure turning contest. The SBD has to E fight it to have a chance. Looking at it strictly as a fighting platform the D3A is much easier to fly purely defensively but it's offensive limitations are significant. Leaving out proxies the D3A has a difficult time scoring kills where you can easily rack up 5-6 true air to air kills in an SBD on a single ammo load.

yea.......i've been doin that with it.
the other night though, where we were defending, i couldn't find too many willing to try n turn with my 38G. there was one guy, that kept commin back........forget his name, but he was a great fight every time. he was incredible controlling a p47 at low speed and literally in the weeds. but i played with my food too long(or my gunnery still sucks) and betty came in and stole my kill.  :rofl

38G doesn't have the outer wing fuel tanks, so it's going to be that much lighter then the J and L.  You burn fuel quicker as 50 in the G isn't the same as 50 in the J/L, but it does turn better.  I tend to fight downhill in the G and uphill in the J because of the wep or lack therof.

hhmm.....i fight downhill in both of them.....but then i'm not very successful in them.......yet

when i launch in any ride, i almost always take external tanks, and max of 50% internal. i keep the tanks as lng as i can, and actually managed to kill the same guy 3 times in his mossie, without ditching them. and no, they weren't vulches. i waited for him to come back to the base i was at where he was trying to pork it though.  :D
