Here's my first
« on: December 01, 2008, 07:21:27 PM »
Folks,
I have had more fun messing with this video than you can imagine. Anyway I took a 17 min hurricane run in TT down to 4-1/2 min.
I used Fraps to capture raw footage (plan to have Sony Vegas Pro for next vid) quality fell off.
I used Adobe Premiere Pro for editing....great program for as I am concerned (you tell me).
The quality fell off bunches using utube, is there a better host?
Please give me your input, all constructive criticism is welcome. (Denholm)
I know that I have just embarked on a very steep learning curve.

Regards,

Forker

Thanks yanksfan, it means a lot coming from you.

As a matter of fact concerning "quote" you are right on, I have been experimenting with the camera shot feature. I would really appreciate a tutorial on it.

Brilliant! Bravo! Excellent! Superb!
It was amazing, the splendor of the vibrations of those strings in the domed building making that sophisticated echo. Absolutely lovely. However I would recommend that the composer bring in some more Cellos, Clarinets, Flutes, Trombones, a Tuba, and a drum, for the deep dark mystical feel of awe.

Oh... I'm supposed to review the film? Dang it....

Not bad, you have a hang on it. You have an idea of what you want to do, and where you want to go with it. I did see some area of concern, though. The main concern was lighting. This may simply be from your editor, Adobe Premier. However the forest tiles of the terrain were very dark in your film, and whenever an aircraft flew into such a region it was difficult to see them on the film. So make sure you have enough light in the film for the viewer to decipher what is going on.

The next thing you might want to work on, zoom levels. I do realize that using chase view and zooming at the same time is nearly impossible, so keep this one in mind for when you start working with camera angles. Anyways, the film becomes more personal for the viewer when you zoom in and show them what's going on with you, and your opponent. In this I'm saying that the viewer should always be able to see your opponent when you're in a fight and what you're doing to light his tail on fire. There are multiple things you can do with camera angles, you simply have to know how to choreograph it properly to give the proper amount of spice to the user.

The last part you should work on is adding sound effects to your film, it adds that extra factor of immersion that us viewers can't resist to bathe ourselves in.

Not bad for a start! You have the will power and the potential, all you have to do is seize the opportunity to make something great. :aok

Good start on some of the camera shots, especially on the p51 missing its wing.  Don't be afraid to do some shots from inside the cockpit through your gun site.  It gets a little stagnant with the majority of the footage being take from the external 6 oclock position of your plane.

Great job on the sound effects, I thought they were actually recorded in-game they were timed so perfectly. Spectacular job on your first three camera shots. Especially enjoyed the last one. I do agree with Fulmar, toss it up a bit. Too much of the same thing doesn't always turn out too well.

For your next project, keep in mind that the film doesn't have to be made from footage of a single sortie. You can use multiple clips and throw them together in a unique combination. Oh, and don't forget to start playing with the quality settings when exporting your film. Yeah, YouTube films have their quality altered regardless of what the original quality was. However that doesn't keep you from making a downloadable version that stuns the audience with the amazingly crisp film and audio.

Have fun out there, but don't take too long to submit your next finished project. ;)

Thanks for the input guys.

Fulmar – I agree, the outside the plane shots are somewhat overstretched but here is my problem: my in game head position is as far up as I can get it to be able to see over the nose of the aircraft to pull as much lead as I can and still see the opposing aircraft thus when I compile footage using the default view you never see the opposing aircraft when the shots go off. I rarely take a standard 6 o'clock shot but I managed to include a couple default view shots in this “LAST” revision.

Denholm – I think I improved the quality a little using mediafire, it lets me upload a lot of different formats. It's just that to get really good quality at this point the upload takes hours and for a person to access it they have to endure over a 20 minute download....not good. I really need help in this area.

Yanksfan – The camera shot tutorial was great! However it did not cover the “plane relative” aspect of this feature and I don't have a clue as to how to use it. I have been “messing” with it trying to catch on but with no success.

Rev.3 http://www.mediafire.com/?hmtyomyotzh

Anyway I am already working on project 2 and hope to have it to an acceptable point in a couple weeks.

Forker

Glad to see you're sticking to it and working to improve. I can't help you with the shots and quality, I'm certain others can.

Forker, I want to address your quality questions.  Let's take it from the beginning.

1) Are you using the Save to AVI feature in the Film Viewer or are you using something like Fraps?
2) What are you using to compile the movie scenes together?  Window Movie Maker? Virtual Dub? Sony Vegas? Adobe Premiere?  Something else?
3) You talk about quality settings and adjusting it with Mediafire (I'm not too familiar with the site), what does it let you do and what is it adjusting?

From my experience with the free portion of MediaFire, it's only a web server hosting your file(s). It doesn't allow you to edit the content of the file(s).
