190A-4 Stab/JG54
« on: December 02, 2008, 02:54:24 PM »
Hopfully I can get them to replace that horrible excuse for a winter skin that I have in the game now for this updated one. The body and wings are pretty much done but with the amount of weathering on top I still have to work on making the bottom match up. From what info I have it says that it was a plane with factory default colors just painted over with the winter white. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Looks nice :aok
The only thing I'd point out, is that it seems that the wear patterns (especially on the wing) are a bit random. Particularly on the wingroots, where even regular paint normally wore thin or even to the metal, yet still the water-based whitewash holds on. Same thing goes for the engine doors, where on all aircraft (not only 109's 110's and 190's, but Yak's and La's and other whitewashed Russian aircraft) there is quite a bit of wear from those doors being opened and whatnot in between sorties.

I'm glad you're re-working this skin. One thing I'd point out is that all your weathering is just plain old black. If it's worn that heavily and that thickly, it would be the camo pattern underneath, rather than simple shadows. Run up a fast camo layer, stick it under your white layer, and turn your black smudges layer into a mask, or an alpha, that actually shows through to the colors underneath. See how that looks.

Just a thought.

That's what that is. From the info it said it was a factory default colors just painted over with the winter white. I have a book showing 190A4s on the assembly line just after getting their paint on and the Balkenkreuz stencils on. So that's what I did made a factory default skin and put the white over it. I then took an eraser to the white for the fading effect. I did put a little layer of dark gray over some of the white that may be whats blocking the camo underneath Ill delete that and get you guys an update tomarrow.

Boobie :) and Arch are right so I'm ganna rework the white wash and Ill try to make the default camo bleed though more. In the mean time here is the factory camo that I put on there under the whitewash. (it has the "weathering" layer for the overall skin enabled so that's why it is a little dark and weathered.)

Oh man... my skins suck so much compared to that.

 :cry

I need to go back to the drawing board on all of them.

I'm sumbiting my six P39 skins this weekend along with others that Iv finished.

Arch try to find as many tutorials you can on skinning (Il2 tutorials work to) and just find the stile you like. One thing I can tell you is weathering is what makes a skin. My weathering layer set has more layers then every thing else in my skins.

I don't know if what you describe is what's happening on the skin. Take for example the fuselage and the vertical stab. The colors underneath would be lighter shades, visible from the white, but not the dark black-ish smudges on the first screenshot.

Also, I think your base camo layer is a bit too desaturated. There's almost no difference between the two shades of grey. Basically what I'd like to see is variations in the different colors showing through the whitewash when I look at the wing (either in F3 view or from the cockpit), just so you know what I'm looking for  :D

Nice Work.

Not to change the subject, Just curious if the A4 skin is allowed on an A5.

The differences are few and I'm guessing not so much performance wise, but still visible.

There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

This skin is a redo (for lack of a better term) of one that Larry already has in game, so we can assume that the A4 is fine for skinning.
