Ranking the Bond Films
« on: December 02, 2008, 04:21:10 PM »
Ok, so in the thread on QoS I mentioned that I thought the film was in the top half of the Bond movies. So I thought I'd sit down and see if that were true, if I were to actually try to rank the movies. The first thing I noticed about making the list was that many times, circumstances beyond the actual movie came into play. For example: Nothing really compared to having waited 8 years to see Peirce Brosnan in the role, then finally getting the chance in Goldeneye. Or the fact that "Die Another Day" was possibly really bad, but I was in such a happy place (on Vacation in San Diego) that I was bound to like it.

But with those caveats, here's how they shook out for me at first blush, without a lot of analysis.

1. Dr. No
2. Casino Royal
3. Goldeneye
4. From Russia, With Love
5. for Your eyes only
6. Live and Let Die
7. The living Daylights
8. Thunderball
9. Quantum of Solace.
10.On Her Majesty's Secret Service
11.Goldfinger
12.The Man with the Golden Gun
13.Die Another Day
14. The spy who loved me
15. Octopopsicle
16. Diamonds are Forever
17. Tomorrow never dies
18. Moonraker
19. A View to a Kill
20. You only live twice
21. Licensed to Kill
22. The World is not enough

that was kind of fun.

I wouldn't say I'm "missing" it. lol. I also wasn't counting the Woody Allen Casino Royal for what it's worth.

well although its basically a remake of "Thunderball"  its still better than most of the Roger Moore series, much more better than either of the Timothy Dalton movies, and better than at least two of the Pierce Brosnan

Take Die Another Day off that list. It does NOT even belong there AT ALL. And neither does Never Say Never Again. Both movies show EXACTLY why you shouldn't remake a Bond movie. Because there is no describing the depths to which they suck.

I liked Never Say never again tolerably well. As for Die another Day, you've lost me a bit: What was it a remake of? Or are you referring to the non-stop homages to the previous films and books?

my personal ranking...
1. Dr No
2. Thunderball
3. Goldfinger
4. You Only Live Twice
5. Diamonds are Forever
6. From Russia with Love
7. Casino Royal
8. Quantum
9. Never Say Never Again
10. The Man With the Golden Gun
11. Live and Let Die

I am indifferent to the rest...some of them I havent even made time to see, like Golden Eye, and The Worlds Not Enough.  some day when I'm sufficiently bored....

Sean Connery is the one and only true James Bond, Until Daniel Craig, it only took them 45 years to find a good replacement for Sean Connery...

I think they each bring something redeeming to the role. Connery was probably the best blend in my opinion. He could pull off both ends of the equation: Gentleman and Spy (corny as it may sound). The likes of Moore and Brosnan fall a bit too far to the Gentleman side of it, whereas Craig tends to fall more on the Spy side of it (which is essential in the new telling of the story). Yet even though he was made for the role, I never flet that Connery could save the writing in movies like "You only Live Twice" and "Diamonds are forever" Whereas good writing and direction could even make an aging Roger Moore work in the role as in "For Your Eyes Only"

This is probably the closest to how I would rank them as well, although I've always had a special fondness for Goldfinger (Gert B. Fröbe, what a name :aok).

I grew up with Connery, barely noticed Lazenby (couldn't miss Diana Rigg :aok as Mrs. Bond), thought Moore was attrocious (but somehow horribly typical of the 70's and early 80's), thought Dalton was so-so, and actually welcomed Brosnan after all those horrible Moore films.

Anyway, I couldn't agree more, Connery and Craig are easily the best.

The plot was a heavy ripoff of Diamonds are Forever. Right down to the giant diamond-powered orbital death ray.

I agree with Dr.No being number 1, best Bond movie ever.

For me though, number 2 would be Goldfinger.

Connery is the king no doubt, but craig has potential. Connery was a big man naturaly, where as Craig is average sized and pumped up to the max. For me connery looked the part more with his naturaly bulky frame, but Craig will be adored by the young women of today even more than Connery last century. Either one makes a believable spy imo, the others just didnt have it though Brosnen nearly did in Goldeneye.
Take a prime aged Connery and put him in Goldeneye, that might be the best bond film made yet. Live n let Die, Diamons and Casino Royal rate up there too. The beauty of the older films is you know they paid some poor stuntman to actualy run across those croc's backs for real.
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.
