Windoze Question
« on: December 03, 2008, 02:39:32 AM »
I am running WinXP, IE 6.0. When I try to save a pic off the board, or anywhere else for that matter, it only gives me the option to save it as a .bmp file. I'd rather save them in their original format or at least as a .jpg file. Is there a setting I can change to give me more options?

What I find that works is hitting refresh and then trying to save it.  Most of the time it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Uh? Normally, when you right-click on a pic to copy it, it will keep the pic's format without converting it. The pics are probably bitmaps. Have you tried with Firefox?

You can use softwares like the Gimp for Windows - Open Source to convert it to your preferred format.

Nope. It's every picture no matter the original format. I can always convert them after I save them, but it's a huge pain.

One of the most common causes is actually an error in the Temporary Internet Files folder or an error in the Download Program Files folder. I have also seen this when the cache is either full or sized incorrectly. If this is the program, clearing these folders through Internet Options in the Tools menu will usually fix the problem:

Clear the Cache:

1. Open IE
2. Click Tools
3. Click Internet Options
4. Click General Tab
5. Under Temporary Internet files, you should click Delete Files
6. Confirm with an OK

Or, if you don't want to throw all your Temp files away:

1. Open IE
2. Click Tools
3. Click Internet Options
4. Click General Tab
5. Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings
6. Click View Objects
7. Look at the Status column. Right click on the files listed as either Unknown or Damaged, and then select Remove from the context menu.
8. Confirm with Yes
9. Close the remaining windows by clicking OK

If the above does not work, you may have to remove all the files in the Downloaded Program Files folder.

Download Firefox?
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

when i right click, then click on "save picture as", it puts up a dialog box. this seems to default to what the file type is. there;s a pulldown arrow. that gives me an option. usually, either a bmp, or jpg file.

hope this helps a bit.

When I've tried that it won't give me any options.

Same here. The only option is .bmp

I'll try deleting some temp files, but I don't think that's the problem.

I've seen this problem before but it's been quite a while.  IIRC Cthulhu's way is the correct way to solve it, or at least thats one solution attempt I remember reading about.

What imaging software do you have  installed. I think Windows usually only saves in BMP format unless you have office picture manager or some other programme like Irfanview installed.
