I do not know what the connection situation is like over there, but the Pigs have a squaddie that was playing regularly out of Lagos, Nigeria last year.  So I would say yes...

Yea, my company has operations all over Africa, and Lagos is no different from most of the large cities in the area.  You should be able to find a good internet connection without any real problem, as a lot of the communications networks are surprisingly well developed.  Keep your possessions close though, as petty crimes are quite common.

When entering or leaving Lagos there are a few simple rules which need to be adhered to. 1. Under no circumstances wear any jewellery or watches(as the police will remove them) 2. Always carry small bills in different pockets (to pay off afore mentioned police). 3. Never under any circumstances carry any large bills be it US, Nigerian, Sterling or even Golly-geen martian Zob's they will take the lot!!!

ps, What is it you do in the oil field I'm a rig mechanic.

I've spent some time there. It is a ROUGH town. Make sure you follow the advise of your company's security people. Sadly, trust no one you haven't been introduced to by someone you do trust and DO NOt stop to help stranded or even apparently injured motorists ( I am sure you will have a driver that knows these things. I truly enjoyed Dakar and the East African countries I was in----Lagos is not pleasant.

I've never been to Nigera personally, but I have a good friend who lives there.

He happens to be a former prince who has fallen on hard financial times, but with my help, he plans on regaining his noble title and rewarding me handsomely.

Oddly, I haven't heard from him since I sent him $4,500, which he needed to file some legal documents, but I consider him a good friend, and will pass along his address to you via PM so you'll know someone there.

Cheers!

I lived in that region for a short time. I'm guessing you are aware that western / American, Brit etc... oil rig workers have been kidnapped in the past in Nigeria. I remember it happening when I was there. Just make sure you know what you are getting into before going.

If you have a reliable internet connection there should be no problems but you may find the ping count is a bit higher than your used to due to the distance from the server and it may be a bit laggy at times. Telecomms tend to be a bit erratic as does the power supply. My company has a satcom dome for back up when the telephones go down, there used to be a loony who declared war on the telecom company and used to blow up exchanges, not sure if he is still around, been a while since I was last assigned there.
As Impakt said, follow your companies security advice and you should be okay, its not the kind of country where you can wander about on your own at night, or even during the day in some parts. I have never payed a bribe to get into Nigeria but I have paid to get out a couple of times  :D, It is so not on my list of favourite countries I have been to.

Good luck in your new job
