Why the Spit 16 over the Spit 9?
« on: December 11, 2008, 04:04:52 PM »
More of a question aimed at the spit drivers really :)
Just curious why the 9 doesn't get it's fair share of use, personally think that the 9 is a wonderful little plane, A good solid Spit, not really uber at any one thing, but just good all round, I wish more of you spit drivers would take them up :)

Monkey see monkey do....

If more is better, alot is just right...

The Spit9 is easier to turn fight but the guns are slightly worse.

Erm the Mk XVI is a LF Mk IX with 50s instead of the peashooters.

Edit: American made Packard merlin 266 instead of the merlin 66.

I agree.

Flying against the Spit 9 gives me fits.  I would, ahem, extend from them until Mtnman, or was it MEF4UD, recently heckled me mercilessly when he found out.  So,  I'll fight a Spit 9 now, but I leave, ahem, extending as an option, especially if there aren't any hog drivers around to hurt my feelings.

Spit 16's?  I'm all in.

By looking at the actual numbers, I'd say: It does get its fair share of usage.
Considering the 16 having a few distinct advantages in the LW arena environment, there is an amazing number of Spit IXs around.

Curious about the numbers? Just wait 3 more weeks for the upcoming annual analysis of AH2 MA gameplay:

The Spitfire Mk IX in AH is a Spitfire F.Mk IX powered by a Merlin 61 which is much less suited to the MA style of combat than the Merlin 66 in the Mk VIII and Mk XVI (I know the real Mk XVI had a Packard Merlin 266, but ours has power curves that match the Merlin 66) and thus has lower top speed and climb rate/acceleration than the Mk VIII and Mk XVI.

Because of that the Mk VIII and Mk XVI are better suited to the low altitude combat in AH and are, thus, superior to the Mk IX in AH.

And at 25K it starts looking different :D
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Agreed.  The Spitfire IX is a very tough opponent in FSO at 30k ft! :O

Because much of the crowd figures 16 is a larger number then 9 so it must be more uber :)

I do believe Karnak nailed it.  The VIII and XVI in AH are low alt rated Merlin birds while the IX is medium to high alt rated Merlin powered.

It's 40 mph faster, rolls like a 190, and turns like a spit, but with better guns.

The real question is why you'd think the spit9 is better?

And I don't think it has anything to do with numbers. Back with the super-boosed Spit5 we had with 2x ammo load it was lord king of the EZ mode rides, despite the lower "number" in the name.

So the name itself has little to do with it.

I'd take our old Vc over the XVI every time :) .
