F4U landing gear bug
« on: December 13, 2008, 02:07:16 PM »
Just a bug for the F4U-1 landing gear- I was flying around with the F4U-1 today in the Training Arena, and i noticed that while going over 200mph, the gear still didnt break. I even tested going out of A3 in Training Arena, and i reached around 400mph, and the gear still didn't break like it probably should, and I also tested all the other F4Us, and they did the same thing, can someone tell me wether this is a bug or not?

Rafale, the F4U's landing gear was very strong and even had a "dive brake" lever position.

Not a bug.

HTC didnt model the dive brake position for the gear. Just let them extend at high speed. Real F4u's would only partially extend the gear for dive brake position.

Ah I was wondering about the gear for the F4Us. I think I may have ran across a bug with the landing gear, only slightly different...

I dont know if I am doing it wrong, but when I land an F4U, any of them, I hit my spacebar to initiate my brake. I then apply some left rudder to counter the drag and keep my plane on the runway. As I get slower, my plane instantly veers off to the right, as if the right brake suddenly clamped, then I go barreling down the grass and collide into a building.

Another time, I tried using the airlerons to counter the plane's tendency to veer off to the right. I used left rudder and left airleron. My plane still spun around out of control.

I may be doing this wrong, but I never have problems landing any other plane. Seems the F4U wants to spin around crazily once I slow down on the runway. Ive tried several methods on landing the corsair, but every single one of them spins out of control when slowing down.

Plazus, what you are encountering is what's know as a "ground loop".  When you are on final go full flaps and keep a nose high attitude and use your throttle to control your descent.  Basically you wanna get the timing down so you are slowly decreasing throttle up till you are about to touch down.  When you are just about to touch down cut the throttle(reducing torque) and just ride the stall horn the last 50 to 100ft in.  When you hit the runway keep the stick pulled back at least 25%(this locks your tailwheel) while you apply the breaks until you are at a complete stop.
To each their pwn.

Oh okay. Sounds like that should solve my F4U landing problems. Tricky plane to land, that F4U. I will definitely try that method next time. Thank you!  :salute

Stall the plane onto the runway, touch down in a 3 point.  (meaning the two main gear, and tail wheel at the same time).  Keep the stick pulled aft to lock the tailwheel, and apply brakes.  The corsair is notorious for ground looping, but the method above is how I have best found to keep  her under control on the ground.

Keep in mind this is designed as a naval aircraft.  Naval aircraft are not gently landed with a nice pretty flare as are land based aircraft.  Generally they are practically "crash landed" onto the deck.  This means you reall dont flare, but rather fly it onto the deck in a 3 point configuration.

Tec and Sol75 nailed the f4U landing- the trick is to touch down just as the plane stalls out.  80mph maximum at touchdown, with full flaps.

Also, differential braking can help quite a bit.  Instead of using the space bar to apply both brakes equally, use a key for each wheel.  Giving more left brake helps keep the plane from ground-looping to the right, etc...

So far I havent experienced problems with the Ta152. But I tried the landing tricks above, and wow! What a difference it made. Thanks again guys!  :salute

Rider, the trick is to come in real flat, under 150TAS and keep the gears up. Helps prevent ground loops.
