This wouldnt really work. Not only is a pilot legaly blind if he has icons off, he is even worse than that if he has em off and is running 1024x resolution or less. There would be an artificial handicap unevenly distributed according to what resolution people are playing. Refresh rate also means a lot to having realistic IDing time.

And lacking stereoscopic view (which may be even the biggest drawback), I can't neither judge distance nor closure rate even remotely close to my RL capability, which isn't stellar in the first place. Lacking better resolution and 3D display, I'm reduced to a one-eyed extremely nearsighted pilot.

Actually, stereoscopic view not a factor here at all. It works at very limited range, something like dozens of meters only, afaik. Anything further is flat for our eyes, hundreds of meters just out of question.

Agreed.  The issue is the range at which simple things like aircraft facing can be identified, let alone aircraft type.

In the AvA arena, you might be able to get away with only friendly icons on, since you know how many different enemy plane types you would have to identify. You would have to leave friendlies on to communicate though.

I fly offline missions sometimes with  icons totally off and it's kinda  fun since you know what your up against, and you don't have to communicate with friendlies.

I tried playing with only friendly icons on in the  MA, but it wasn't fun, since there are way to many enemy planes to identify, but maybe for a little more realism, get rid of the distance icon once an enemy is under 600, or 400.

I could see alot of unoffical revenge killings (well, self killing but with virtual murder intentions) among teammates in the game if AH ever did this  :uhoh

As I said:
"Please, bring a LOT more options for the scenario CM's and h2h hosts concern the arena/room ICON options. This would really improve the variance for the people who are tired to the regular MA-fast food."

People just are lacking the guts.... IE "WAAAA! MY ICONS!!!"

I DO agree with CMs being able to turn icons off in special events

Sorry to be so harsh... but that's utter nonsense.  :P

In the so praised real real life, I have no problem identifying a plane at 2K or determining it's heading

In AH with no icons, it's just a few pixels. Compare the resolution of the human eye to the crappy resolution an ordinary 19" screen provides.

Actually icons make fighting more realistic in some way, giving us a workaround and providing us information that would be obvious in RL.

Anyone looking for the ultra but nonrealistic challenge in the MA can do it if he wishes. But as an MA arena setting, it's garbage.

I agree, I have plenty of hours logged in a 172 and a 183, and in RL, I'm able to spot a plane (unless it's in a REALLY bad spot, in which case it's usually "Report trafic in sight" at unbelivable levels in my Headset :D) but in AHII, the resolution, screen refresh rate (usually set at 60 Hz if I'm not mistaken), PLUS, except in AvA arena, it's a mix of allies planes and axis planes, so, even if you DID spot a plane, you have no way of determining if it's friendly or not. So, imo, crazily stupid idea.

So maybe, we should have fighting styles set per-plane as it was used in RL? HO in a zero/KI etc...  :aok

Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life really are: You only
need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the
WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Hi all,
I have been flying with no enemy icons for around six months at least.

My main motivation was skill level. In my opinion all those red neon signs around make the game far too easy ..after  9 years, I was over it.

So I bit the bullet and havnt looked back.

You regularly get bounced.
You have to check you 6.
Rely on your fellow flyers to communicate the situation
Spot ground vehicles by their fire or dust tracks/movement
Learn to identify aircraft sillouetts / Closely watch enemy aircraft as they fly past.
Observe the performance and flying style of an aircraft or paint job to learn which model/varient you are fighting.

Over time, you get a better feel for energy states and distances, you dont need a meter counting down closure rates. You can actually visually descern it, after a while.
There is less firing at long ranges, and more use of the gunsights when firing.
I have a 22 inch monitor with a GF8800-320 at 4xAA.

This is my experience, I recommend all to try it.
