If you really want to spike your anxiety, google most meds...the side effects will worry you silly.

Like any med, if you have those kinds of reactions after starting them, call your Dr.  I discovered that pomegranate juice and Liptor is baaad the other day.  (Intensifies the medication, makes you really ache!)

I don't understand what you mean by this, what benefit would a cutlure of the microorganism bring instead of treating the infection.

If cultures were performed more frequently the use of broad based antibiotics would be minimized. This would allow some of the older drugs, like pcn, to be used effectively and it would also reduce the number of drug resistant strains of bacteria out there.

Just like anything else, be an educated consumer and make sure you ask questions.

So many people just completely missed the point of this thread - he didn't mean that all anti-biotics are bad, just this one in particular, do you understand that?  Don't be stupid.

Many anti-biotics have side effects, but those side effects do not occur nearly as frequently or as intensely as those associated with Avelox.  Sure, reading the side effects of many drugs can make one uneasy, but they are not likely to occur - whereas with Avelox, it seems that a majority of the side effects are garaunteed to occur in a majority of the individuals that take the drug - and that isn't good.  My sister just took 6 Avelox over the course of a few days and she's still shaking and having aural hallicinations along with feeling like stump.

It's being prescribed for the wrong reasons.

Now that you mentioned it the finnish school shooter was also on anti-depressants..

He had stopped taking the drugs like a week or two before. Must've got his brain on overdrive. One reason why I don't support anti-depressants for every kind of depression - there really isn't a drug that doesn't set you off for couple weeks after you stop taking those. Brain can get funny when it no longer receives the usual dosage of a substance all of the sudden.

Sounds like stuff that should be taken only as the last resort when no other antibiotic works out.

I googled for it and one of the first results was a warning issued to Finnish National Agency For Medicines by Bayer. The only link before that was the description of the drug.

Yep I agree that most of the drugs in this family of anti-biotics are being used incorrectly. One of the biggest warnings with Levaquin that was not printed on the notice that the give you is that people who take it should not have direct exposure to sunlight. I was outside in a short sleeved shirt for 45 minutes and the sunburn that I got was equivalent to a 2nd degree burn from open flame.

Not to mention the other side effects they list for the medication on the following link.

I don't have a whole lot of faith anymore in 'modern' medicine.  Unfortunately, I never had much faith in alternative medicine.

Some things (like cancer) doctors are real good at treating.  Other things, not so much.

I was on those quinolines (sp) for several months for a prostate infection.  Stopped taking them after three months didn't seem to fix it.. problem is slowing going away on its own.  The specialist pretty much admitted that he didn't know what was wrong or how to fix it, and apparently that is typical.

I think the OP is taking it a bit to far though... the meds aren't going to kill you.

Without antibiotics I would probably be dead, and same to my younger daughter.
And the most powerful one is,,,,penicillinkalium. If it works....

Antibiotics are many, and most do great use. There are better and worse, and they get abused (from the top of my head as a routine in cattlefeed is the most stupid use), - but without them we would see more third-world like death toll amongst the young and unlucky.
Claiming that Antibiotics are just bad is like saying food is bad.....bahh :(
