UPGRADING RAM

I have a GA-EP35-Ds3l gigabyte MOBO..I currently have 2 gigs of 1066 Gskill..
Am going to be getting 2/2gig sticks to UG to 4,,probably going with OCZ fatality editions of some sort,inexpensive right now and seems like good ram..

 I am Oc'ed average is 3.6 and currently OC'to 3.9 On a wolfdale E8400..

 My question is...Do I want to get 800speed RAM or more 1066???Does it matter,and why???

You need to match all your ram if I am not mistakin. So if your adding ram you either need to get same model/size as existing or get all new. Are you using XP or Vista. XP will not utilize 4G ram it will recognize 3G. The price of ram is cheap, get the 2(2G) sticks of 1066.

I'd get 2 - 2GB's sticks as opposed to 4 - 1G's.

Yes I will be pulling out these 2/1gig sticks of 1066,and putting them in the drawer.I am looking at getting 2/2 gig sticks for a total of 4g..

 I am looking at OCZ..those mushkins are nice masher,but about $10 out of my range.

 SO 1066 is  the way to go instead of the 800????

Masherbrum has a good link on newegg but I would get the OCZ Reaper series for that board.  Like DrD said don't mix and match ram and 2 x 2 is more stable then 4 x 1.  Here is some reaper at 49.00 after rebates.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227289  its 1066 and will OC to 1600 and beyond on that board.  The reason for 1066 over 800 is FSB speed.  The faster the FSB, which means more info passing from component to component the faster the system.

With your current OC, your motherboard and the proposed memory (my suggestion or Masherbrum) you will notice an increase in application opening, photoshop improvments, and maybe an increase in FR in some games ( using the 1600 FSB).

 ANd if I may tildeth,or anyone else,WHen I look at my CPUZ on ram it says at this OC(3.999)that my ram and FSb are running 5:6..I always heard that one wants that at a 1:1 ratio...DiD I miss something?

XP will not utilize 4G ram it will recognize 3G.

64 bit XP will recognize something like 128 Gb of RAM just like 64 bit Vista.  32 bit Vista has the same 4 Gb limitation that 32 bit XP has.

Yep, I have the 32 bit and have wondered if buying 64 bit and using the current OS for a 2nd PC would be beneficial.

Yes 1:1 is whats also called Linked and Synced (CPU and Memory), but 5:6 is almost 1:1.  If your system is stable at this setting you could try in your BIOS getting it to 1:1 but you may have to adjust all the ram settings to get there.  I personally would not do it, not worth the time and aggravation, and the system performance increase would be null.

Masherbrum what apps do you run that your in need of additional memory?  Most people are good to go with 4gb unless your rendering, doing huge calculations, video editing.  Just curious.

The voltage on the processor is a little higher then I like to see it.  Can you get the same GHz but at 1.325 which is a ceiling I think is safe.  But the settings are what they are.  With the new memory you should get better timings and this mem is rated to 2.1 volts so you may see 1800 FSB and be able to push your processor a little more but again the voltages on the CPU are my only concern.

What type of cooling are you using?  What HSF combination.  On air I always use OCZ's Vendetta 2.  It has (in benchmarking) out performed buy as much as 30c (stock HSF) and averages about 8c lower then anything else out there on air (out of the box).  Also BenchMark reviews has the Vendetta 2 as its 2008 HSF of the year with comparisons to the competition available along with Graphs for the reading impaired. For a quick reply deth...The Vdroop on this board is UN-godly..

I have it set at 1.45000v in BIOS,just to get what you see..I will try dropping it down a notch or 2 on voltages..

 I am using a HUGE HSW/fan..forget the name of it...

Hey Tildeath, I have my vcore set at 1.355 and am running oc at 4.06 ghz. Is that voltage too high? I'm using an E8500.
