Why is M-4 "perked"?
« on: December 24, 2008, 05:51:48 PM »
Just wondering why the firefly is a perk veh? It has the weakest gun of any of the tanks in the game. i know its not supposed to be that way.....but, come on...FIVE hits to "turret" a wirb? Two solid (no ricochets) flank hits on a T-34 and nothing. Just venting a little,,,,,

sounds like you got infected with the user.exe virus.

it can be a pretty rough one to fix.

The Firefly has one of the STRONGEST guns in AH (with the Tiger and the T34/85 ahead of it).  Maybe the Wriblewind has light armor, meaning the AP rounds go through the turret before doing any damage?  I really don't know, but thats the case with M3s and M8s and whatnot.

The 17lber on the Firefly is definitely better than the 85mm on the T-34/85 and probably better than the 88mm on the Tiger.

I havent used the T34/85 since it came out so I didn't know.  The Tiger can do more damage at long range compared to the Sherman IMHO

Actually, I believe the amount of success the Sherman Firefly has is not relative to the amount of perks it costs.  I believe it should be perked even more.

I think this is correct: The Tiger's main gun has better armor penetration at long range, (or perhaps more accurately, the Tiger's heavier armor allows it to withstand hits and long ranges better) however inside I believe 1500yds the Sherman's gun takes over.

This REALLY came into effect in the last FSO. Heavy ground clutter restricting visibility and line-of-sight, and the overly effective camouflage of the Shermans, (default skin virtually disappears against any sort of background) meant that the ground engagement was fought at very close ranges (most definitely inside 1500yds) where the Tiger's superiority at long range was virtually negated. I heard even experienced GVers remark on being completely unable to locate the Shermans until they were almost right on top of them.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

More appropriately, why is HT not willing to actually put a significant perk on it? If you are going to perk it, then do so. Currently the perked tanks are as readily available as the non-perked tanks, so the perk cost is redundant. Why bother?

In my experience, the Firefly's gun is better than the Tiger's at all ranges.  My evidence is anecdotal, but I've had Tiger vs Tiger long range slug fests before with both tanks taking 3-4 hits but neither dying outright; against the Sherman it has never taken more than two pings to kill my Tiger at any range.
