Season's Greetings and Solar Gazing
« on: December 24, 2008, 09:38:34 PM »
Merry Christmas all!  I hope this season find you and yours healthy and happy!

Free time and clear skies finally coincided long enough for me to try my new (pre-owned) Hydrogen-Alpha Solar Telescope.  There wasn't much surface activity (no sunspots) but there were a few nice prominances along the edges.  Here is one I tried to image.  It came out pretty good, but I still felt like I was seeing a little finer detail at the eyepieces.

Wow, sweet pic.  That's pretty cool having a scope you can check out the sun with, whats a setup like that run?

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.

Great gallery.
How many go in the bin for each good one you get? Merry Christmas and have a great Hogmanay.

Yeah, next time I'm going to do a mosaic to get the whole disk.  This was just a quick test.

Mine is a Lunt 60mm doublestacked.

If anyone was wanting to get their feet wet in h-alpha solar observing I would recommend a "Coronado PST".  Its a great little scope that will show you prominances and some surface detail.  Fits on a camera tripod, and for $500 its probably the best bang for the buck.  I had one and enjoyed it for a couple of years before deciding to upgrade t a Lunt.

Clear Skies,
