If you add subs, add cargo ships and battleships too
« on: November 09, 2001, 03:55:00 AM »
Subs are for sinking cargo ships, not warships.  The Japanese tried to use subs for warship hunting, but never got a good return for their invenstment using that tactic.  The USN and Kreigsmarine on the other hand did well against cargo shipping.  Thats how AH should be designed if and when the subs get added.

Also, it would be nice to have two types of war fleets.  A carrier battle group like we have, and another type that replaces the carrier with a battleship.  Those batteship fleets could be used in the shore assault role, as well as the popular gunship vs gunship fights.

C'mon.  Who hasn't dreamed of commanding a battlship in a gun duel?

I'd like to see a battle group with a battleship replacing the carrier.

What kind of battleship would we want to see?

Iowa class?
Yamato class?
King George V class?
Bismark class?

Personally, I'd vote for a Yamato or Nagato class BB.

"You sank my battleship!"
  :D

Adding that would make things more fun.  You'd be able to go convoy hunting to disrupt supply at fields.  You'd have to wonder whether the specks down below or on the horizon is a convoy, a carrier battlegroup, or a battlegroup.

Subs would be nice, but I guess that'll be up to HTC.  I'd love to take a Type XXI boat out and hunt stuff.  I heard that some of the IJN boats were actually faster than the Type XXI's under water.

Well, the carrier is a US one, so I all for spreading the joy around, so no US BB.

I also tend to shy away from the Yamato and Musashi.  There just to much, and should be held in reserve untill there are several ships to choose from.  A "normal" battleship is what I would want.

Bismark or King George class.  If I did have to go with a USN battleship, I wouldn't use the Iowa, but the North Carolina class.  The Iowa class was not the only class of battleship the US had you know.

would be cool to have supply ships.  so you could resupply port bases.  it would be the more traditional target for a sub.  subs where originaly designed to hide from other warships, not hunt them.

Subs killed an awful lot of capital ships for you to say that they didnt go after warships.  True, the general strategy was usually to go after their merchant navy but submarine skippers were more than happy to get off a few "tin fish" at any warship that they came across.  Some major warships sunk by subs:
Royal Navy lost the Royal Oak (battleship) and Warspite (battleship) to subs, then later lost the Ark Royal (aircraft carrier) as well i believe.  A human torpedo attack from an Italian sub sunk two more RN battleships in port.
USN lost the Wasp (aircaft carrier) to an IJN sub, also the Yorktown (cv also) was finished off by a sub.
IJN lost one carrier at midway that was finished off by a USN submarine, also at least one battleship and 2 more carriers were sunk by USN submarines including the Shinano (CV) which was the largest warship of WW2. Subs can play a potent role against warships if they find them.

HTC mighta opened a whole can of worms with this one (subs).

A remote spawning system will be needed so a player doesn't have to spend days getting to the action.

The ocean itself will probably have to be redone. A sea floor will have to be added, and some type of pressure gradient to keep the depth monkeys at a reasonable depth. Be nice if the surface was redone so a ditching plane would make a splash and actually sink.

If theres subs, gotta be some way to kill em, so that means a player controllable D.E. with depth charges. Course that means the D.E. will also need some type of sonar tracking system.

Gonna need a recon plane to find those pesky lil' periscopes, so a PBY would be nice. One with the land base upgrade would be my choice. (also good for picking up downed pilots, or saliors whose ship has been sunk by said sub)

Might also be a good time to introduce another bomber into the plane set. The B-24 was by far the most successful sub killer of WWII. Have a loadout option for land bombs or depth charges.

Yup, quite a can of worms.

would also be cool to be able to rescue downed pilots from subs or pt's.

Who would want to sit around bobbing in the ocean waiting to be picked up when they could .EF to get into another plane or boat?

Unless of course it was used in scenarios - you can re-up after being shot down (assuming you bailed before crashing) when you are rescued by a PBY or something else  :D

Its gotta have long range and short range recon planes!  :)
sea planes so we can land on water would be superb! As long as they have depth charges or torpedoes of course. No point in adding anything which has no affect so if we get convoys they should have or play a significant role.So that their destruction is worth spending hours Sailing/driving around in subs   :)

Player controled battleships will just get rediculous! imagine 50 battleships spawning over and over!?   :p

sure put them in but we dont really need them yet.Id rather see more unusual aircraft or merchant ships to prowl upon.Lets have some fun being king of the seas in our subs for a while before we get deadly destroyers everywhere please.
Later, when we eventually get the big battleships or destroyers, we will appreciate how dangerous they were rather than grabbing a sub and getting slaughtered  because of  many roaming battlefleets.

Subs...fantastic.
we need:

long range recon(sunderland/b24/cantalina/condor)
short range recon/seaplanes
merchantships
and lots of ocean to hide/hunt in  :)
depth charges.
refueling ships/bases moveable at sea?

Hazed,

Player controlled battleships would be have to be done the same way that carriers are.  A battlegroup spawns from its port 15 minutes after its predecessor is destroyed.  The highest ranking player that wants to control it gets too.

Two battlegroups and two carrier groups per country.
